If her doctor said she could take the pills while she was pregnant that's once thing, but if she abused drugs while being pregnant then that's a whole different issue. When my baby was born he was only one month early and still only 5 pounds, but I'm petite. He is very short and only 31 pounds and he's 2, but compared to the other 2 year olds he looks their size. You didn't really specify what kind of medical problems her child has so I don't really know if the pills she took hurt the baby or not. If you are in a lot of pain I really don't think one pain pill is going to hurt your baby. People get pain killers injected in their spine right before birth, and usually it doesn't hurt the baby at all, I'm sure you'll be all right. Another thing you have to consider is if you are in a lot of pain than that causes a lot of stress which is bad for the baby, but it's your choice so you were right to tell your friend off if her pill poppin really did give the child medical problems.

She took Oxycontin and Ambien without real supervision by a doctor and an antinausea drug with supervision. She also ate almost nothing but McDonald's. The baby was 5 pounds at 40 weeks and at 3 years old still fits into clothing for an 18 month old. She has colitis, gamma-globulin deficiency, type 1 diabetes and chronic respiratory illness. I have no idea if the immunity issues are related to the drug use but the small size and failure to thrive are. Her justifications for her behavior were that withdrawal might cause her to lose the baby and this was better for them both. It's hard to see how. The child is constantly at the hospital with infections. The hardest thing of all is that she seems to enjoy administering medications to her daughter. The type 1 diabetes is particularly worrisome. She will feed the child candy, test her sugar and hour later and then remark at how high the sugar levels are without administering any insulin. Like it's an interesting phenomenon of some kind. I feel like something else may be at foot with this lady. Something deeper than just being a pillhead.

there is a phenomenon known as munchausen syndrome by proxy where a parent will create fake illness in her children. these people enjoy caring for the supposedly sick child.

in this case, the child actually has medical problems, but these were created and are exacerbated by her mother. maybe this is a case of ms by proxy taking it one step further?

I thought of this. Read up on the issue and yeah, this lady has almost all of the earmarks. She's even a medical professional. A nurse at a major hospital. Her child is literally always sick or being raced to the hospital. The last time was the child had somehow swallowed some hearing aid batteries while being supervised by her mother. I just really feel odd calling in CPS. There IS the possibility that this stuff is real and the batteries an accident and all the rest. Just how common is something like Munchausen's?

Please reread MY post. Yes if the pills your refusing to take do not interact with the pregnancy than there is no need to worry. I am sure she had a doctor supervising her pregnancy and as a medical professional may know what medication may endanger the baby. I think your being rash without knowing how the medication interacts with the baby.

Okay so let me get this straight. You are endorsing this woman's notion that I am crazy NOT to take medication that is deemed safe by a doctor? Knowing that the thinking on some of these "safe" decisions can flip when new research is done? I've got two words for you: Thalidomide Baby. Women in the 70's took perfectly "safe" anti-nausea drugs that gave them babies with flippers! I had a pain issue that went away over time. The medication I was recommended was for pain. I had an injury and the injury healed so I chose not to take the pain meds and I'm crazy? It's not like I had an active infection and not taking the meds would endanger me or my baby. It was just pain. Some bad pain but not worth the risk to me. As far as this lady I am talking about is concerned, I want to know why it was so important to her that I take these meds and the answer may be to make herself feel better about the baby she undeniably screwed up. I have seen her dose that baby with so much asthma medication it fainted. I think a little medical knowledge can be deadly in the hands of an obsessive like her and I genuinely fear for the child. This is why I posted.

I am not saying your crazy, if you could bare the pain its your decision and it is fine. I could understand someone insisting on giving you pain medication. I do not know the woman but, ff I saw someone I care about hurt mentally or physically and I can do something that can help them I would try to.

Honestly from reading everything on here I do think that the mother may have MSP. Though I don't know your 'friend' very well you also have to consider how often she goes to visit the hospital herself or how often she used to before having her child. The fact that she was taking all this medicine, her child has frequent visits to the hospital. On the same note though Diabetes type 1 can cause the immune system to fail if not treated properly. Since she isn't treated the child like she should though you should call CPS on her because she isn't giving her child insulin as often as she should and she is giving the child candy which she should NOT be doing.

No your not being unfair. If you care about the life inside you then you would not do anything that could ultimately cause harm to them, such as the example with your friend.

If you are concerned then definately call in the social services/ CPS (whatever it is called in your country). She will never have to know it was you.

It is better for her to be investigated and come out as being assessed as OK and no danger to her child, rather than not assessed and in danger.

The potential impact of poorly managed diabetes (particuarly in a child) is profound and could affect her for the rest of her life. Could you live with this on your conscious knowing that you had not done anything to help your friend and her child?

It could be advantageous to your friend for you to call them, to enable her to get any help that she needs.

I think you are super smart to not use any drugs. When my mom was pregnant with me, doctors were prescribing this new drug left and right (I forgot what it was but it was to help with morning sickness). She refused to take it, and a few years later they found out that it was the cause of a lot of abnormalities. However, while your friend shouldn't pressure you to do anything, you will lose her as a friend if you say anything negative about her child or her choices. Plus, I was born 5 lbs 9 ozs, full term, and completely healthy. Some babies are just small and some are big.

It sounds like you are genuinely concerned, have good reason to be, and are smart enough to intuitively know that drugs (and unhealthful foods) hurt mom and baby during pregnancy AND during birth.

Call child services on this woman. It sounds like she might have Munchhausen's syndrome. Google that and see if it sounds like your friend. Good luck and don't let this lady ruin the child any further.

if she was abusing any drugs, even prescription or over the counter, while pregnant then she was abusing the child before it was born. and has led to a harmful life for the child.
you can take painkillers for your pain. just in moderation. ask your doctor about the proper amount to take while pregnant.

i also suffer from type 1 diabetes and what she's doing is damaging to the child if that continues the child WILL slowly turn blind.
im not sure about the other conditions but it sounds bad, call social services on that bitch
