Everytime I clean out the excess grass from the lawnmower after mowing the lawn, I get scared it's going to turn on and chop my hand off. Sometimes I just leave the grass inside after I'm done. Is this normal?

That depends. If you have a flymo 440 it's no problem. On the other hand, If you've got a Bosch 190e, then that's a whole new ballgame !
