Fear of rocks under water

I have a fear of rocks (and sometimes other things like logs or pipes, but it's mostly rocks) that are underwater. Not small rocks, but big, boulder-like rocks. Why is this? I can't go swimming in a lake or ocean where I know there are rocks, or where I can;t see the bottom, because I'll be afraid my foot will touch a rock. Is anyone else afraid of rocks that are underwater?

Even when I go kayaking, I hate looking over the edge of the kayak and seeing boulders that are underwater. It freaks me out to the point of having a panic attack. Is it normal?
Do you think it's normal?

Yes, it comes from the inherently Japanese fear of Rockzilla, the horrible giant rock monster from outer space that lies dormant beneath every lake, sea, creek, puddle and ocean.
Rocks are just large pieces of sand. You have nothing to fear from them.
I sort of know where you are coming from.
I don't like the thought of things lying on the sea bed, especially things that shouldn't be there, like shipwrecks.
It's not nice when your foot touches something in the sea, maybe it's because we think it might be an animal or something!
Or could it be that you're afraid of cutting your foot on the rock?
Maybe you had a bad experience in the sea when you were younger?
No, no experiences from when I was younger.

Not afraid of cutting myself on the rock.

Not afraid of weird sea monsters.

It's the rocks. I don't get it. It's completely irrational. I know I don't have anything to fear from the rocks, but the fear is still there.
Yes! But not rocks... and im ok with going swimming in the ocean ect but i dont like not being able to see the floor. Im more scared of things like log flumes or water rides... all the mechanics under the water really freak me out. i have no idea why cos im not about to jump in. i still go on the rides i just dont like seeing all the mechanics working away... weird i know.
If they were not in water, would they still freak you out?
No that's why I am posting here!
It's weird because I don't remember anything happening in my past that would have caused this. I can remember the first time I started being afraid of rocks under water though, so if something happened to cause it, one would think that I would remember it. I just remember being in my dad's canoe one day and being afraid of the rocks in the water all of a sudden. Weird!
You don't like rocks under water either?
It's not rational, and they're not "modern fears." People have feared strange things for a long time. And the point of a phobia is that it is in fact irrational. One should not be afraid of open spaces, heights, spiders, etc. Do your research before you start trolling internet message boards. That is, if you have a reading comprehension level above that of a 7 year old.
My point was that phobias have been around forever. a phobia is nothing new. I'm just floating around on the internet because I am curious if there are other people who know what I am talking about. Moreover, isn't it always lovely when someone goes onto an internet messageboard to tell someone to stop posting on that very messageboard. It's a very lolz moment.

Everyone has a fear of the unknown. Your fear sounds a little off key but I cant say when if I ever swim in water that I cannot see the bottom of it doesnt scare me also. Ive always heard the best thing to do for your fears is face them. Go take a scuba class and face them head on.
The word phobia is a greek word. It's been around for quite a long time. It's used to describe fears or aversions. The word phobia itself does not specify what. Phobias have been around forever.
@: Leannem
So what if someone grabs rocks of the bottom and throws them at your head? Would that make it hurt more then rocks from land?
You're missing the point. The person attacked "all these new phobias." It's not about "all these new phobias." 2000 years ago people probably had strange fears of wagon wheels or whatever else people used that we don't use anymore. My point is that, if things exist, people will fear them. Get over it, be a little more accepting, and move on.
Things that you should really be afraid of, like some snakes, are not typical phobias. That's a fear based on an animal instinct: snakes can be poisonous. Irrational phobias are different, and they have existed forever. Get. Over. It. The point of a phobia is that you can't just confront it and be cured. It's more complex, and those that suggest otherwise should try to read at least one book before they die. Reading is your friend, you know. I know it's difficult to understand, but some people speak from knowledge. You, however, seem to fail to understand that concept. People who say "it's just a rock" don't understand that that's the whole point. I could say to someone who has a fear of open spaces that, "it's life, get over it, and go outside," but that's not the point of a phobia. It's not as simple as "confronting your fear." Stop watching so many soap operas.
I think I kind of have the same problem...ish. But not with rocks... just with other large things in the water.

To adress the poster - if you must swim in a river or sea, try finding one with a sandy bottom, it might make you rest easier.

i don't really know, maybe a traumatic experience as a child.
:D LMAO
yeah, they are large pieces of sand. that can trap you underwater and bring you to a slow suffocating death.

I have the exact same fear.
I have never had an accident with a boat hitting a rock thats under water. I just got this fear some years ago, and i can't stand seeing rocks underwater. I just freak out when im in a boat and I see a rock. I would love to overcome this fear since I spend a lot of time at the sea side, and sailing, but I have no idea how.
Fear of the unknown
I too feel apprehensive and a bit of anxiety around boulders, trees etc. underwater. Its good to have a healthy respect and concern for water period - such a powerful force - and any possible hazards beneath. Thats not irrational IMO. But not sure about extreme to the point of panic attacks.
i think you died by a rock in your other life
It could possibly be that you're scared of getting crushed by one of these things. Yes, it is normal. I have friends that are scared of huge rocks too. Do I think it's normal? Yeah.
OH MY GOD! I thought i was alone on this. I am completely TERRIFIED of huge rocks underwater and I have no idea why! Everyone makes fun of me for it...but I can't help it! I went parasailing a few weeks ago and they dropped me down to dip me in the water and there was this HUGE rock beneath me and I flipped out so bad. I was yelling and everything hahaha. I'm getting chills right now! What do you think could have instilled this fear in us?!
