I am a 21 year old male with a hairy chest, yet most other men I see lying around sunbathing etc of a similar age seem to have a bare chest. I find it quite confusing because surely if they shave it they would suffer with some form of stubble. Is it normal that most men have a hairy chest and then shave it or is it abnormal to have a hairy chest?

No, if you have a hairy butt, just leave it, who anyway is going to shave a mans hairy butt, if the hair does get really long and you have difficulty in wiping your bottom, then you could trim the longest hairs, but no shaving or anything like that.

About 75%% of Caucasian or Hispanic men have some form of chest hair by their early to mid-20s. Some never do.

"Beauty trends" dictate men's (and often women's) attitudes toward chest hair. During the 1970s, for instance, a hairy chest was a sign of virility and sexuality, and most "leading men" in Hollywood had hairy chests and show-cased them ad nauseum. By the 1990s, chest hair had fallen out of fashion, and men began secretly shaving and/or waxing. Like most trends, this began in the Gay Male community, and then spread to the straight male world. After a decade and a half of smoothness (most of it artificial) chest hair is making a comeback. Numerous articles have been written in the pupular press regarding this trend, and more and more leading men are showing off their fur again.

My advice is to find what makes you sexy, and accentuate it. If that means going against the norm, so be it. There's always someone out there who'll find you attractive, especially if you believe you are.

That is great news, I tend not to read the #popular press# as a lot of what is written on these newspapers is a lot of rubbish, but this time I hope they are correct. Men should be men, if they like me have a hairy chest they should never wax or trim any hairs off. I have had hairs on my chest since they started to appear at about 15 or 16, then they were tiny, but gradually though the years they have got longer. I have now got some stray hairs on my chest that are as long as 6" but the majority of the hairs are about 3 or 4 inches long, nice to see hairy chests make a comeback.

Well done Anonymous, I am 66 and never waxed or trimmed any hairs off.

Well said I have had a hairy chest for over 40 years, I think it is wonderful and manly to have that. I have never waxed or trimmed 1 hair off in all those years, you may be wondering after all that time how long hairs are on a guy who has never waxed or trimmed any hair off in that time, it does vary form man to man, but my chest hair is on average 4" some stray hairs as long as 6", when I was 22, they were only about 1 or 2 inches long. There are some men who have 10" hair on their chests, but I don't mind mine at 4".

they might actually have it waxed, which causes the hair to come back thinner. Either way, you are fine and normal. Don't worry about it.

What are your origins? I'm part polish and norwegian, also very hairy.

My origins are Scottish, there are quite a lot of men in Scotland hairy just like Poland and Norway. There was a article in a newspaper which stated that men from Poland, Norway and Scotland had the hairiest chests in Europe, quite honestly I do not know if that is true, but I do have a very hairy chest, living up to that reputation, some people have compared my chest to a werewolf, but that is their opinion, not mine, I am just proud to have a hairy chest, I would have been so disappointed if I had had no hairs on my chest or only 1 or 2.

Try trimming it very closely with a beard trimmer without the guard. That way, you don't get ingrown hairs when it grows back.

I'm 23 I have no chest hair and I don't shave my chest at all. I do have hairy legs though.

I have hairy legs, I put this down to all the cycling I did when I was a teenager in the late 1950's and 1960's.In those days only professional cyclists shaved their legs, unlike now a days when most or certainly many young cyclists shave their legs even if they are not in a cycling club. I am 66, still cycle quite a lot, not so far as way back, good sporting excersise, like swimming, but I am NOT going to start shaving my legs, now or never.A lot of women like natural smooth hairless chest like you have, what they don't like is some man who shaves his chest, that just leaves stubble, they think that is horrible.

Depends mostly on ethnicity.

It is entirely genetic. Even teenage boys can have hairy chests. Alot of women prefer it, much to my own detriment.

It is entirely normal to have chest hair even as a teen, especially if you are an early
developer like I was. I started shaving at 13 and had a very hairy chest at 15. I was not ashamed of it. Most of the other
guys were envious. Now at 19 my
back is hairy too. It turn some girls off, but others really like it

fransciso, if you don't have a hairy chest by the time you are 36, it is unlikely you will ever have chest hair, but a lot of women love a man who is naturally smooth with no hairs on his chest, what they don't like is a man who has a hairy chest but shaves it off, that leaves stubble which they do not like. My suggestion is for you to strip off in a nice warm day and show off your natural smooth hairless chest to the ladies, they will love you for that.

Yes, it is normal. I have chest hair and so does my best mate - he use to have it removed now he leaves it by his own chose. I never touched mine never bothered me either way. At twenty my back did to. It is my feet that are too, but either they like them or not, now that can feel odd -not meany have that problem? I got those early on. So I can handle chest hair. That can really turn girls off, Hair feet.

Congratulations to you dontmil, great that you had a hairy chest as early as 15, my hairs only started at 16, I know the boys would be envious of you, but like me they would too have a hairy chest by the time they were 18, some are earlier than others on their chest hair. I imagine you as being one of those really hairy guys that has a very thick hairy chest extending all over your shoulders and down your back. But remember NEVER shave, wax or trim any hairs off because that just causes possible side effects such as itching, rash, ingrown hairs, red spots and irritation, I am sure you don't want that, once again congratulations on being so naturally hairy.

Wow dontmil, you are turning out to be a ultra hairy man, starting as early at 13 and having a very hairy chest at 15 indicates that you by 25 years of age and older will be about as hairy as men can be, thick hair extending over chest, down back, over shoulders, ape hairy arms and legs, 7" long hair around and on your penis,as I say ultra hairy. I bet the other men were a bit envious, remember just stay natural and never even trim any hair off, I do hope you met a woman who appreciates a man a hairy as you.

You must be really proud of your chest K&B to have a very hairy chest at 15 is great, you beat me by 2 years, I was 17 when I could call my chest "very hairy" I hope you are like me and NEVER EVER shave, wax or trim any hair off your chest or back in your life.

You sound to me that you are in the "super hairy" category, I am glad you say that you are not ashamed of being so hairy at that age, that is a excellent attitude to have. Super hairy guys usually like you start getting very hairy legs at 13 or 14 and their chests are very hairy by 15. By the time you are in your 20's you will have thick hair ALL over your body with no breaks anywhere, you will be very hairy everywhere. Unfortunately there is a trend for super hairy guys to become bald on their heads by the time they reach 25 or a little later. I hope you don;t become bald by that age. A lot of super hairy men who have won hairy chest competitions have tended to be bald up top. I notice this was posted almost 8 years ago and I am wondering if you are now becoming bald on your head?

true about teenage boys having hairy chests, some as early as 14 now have quite a lot of hairs growing out on their chest, it was never as early as that when I was that age, I did have hairy legs when I was 14 but chest hairs started I think during the 16 to 17 years of my life when I was a teen.

no murdo do NOT shave your chest just because the others don't have hairs, they will by the time they leave school, perhaps they are a little envious of you because you have hairs growing on your chest, some guys are earlier than other, you are one of those people, don't shave and don't worry.

It's normal. My friend's 16-year-old brother has a hairy chest.

A lot of guys shave their chest. It doesn't grow as quickly as facial hair so their isn't stubble for a couple days. If you don't want it, maybe you can try Nair or something like that. I wouldn't wax it...oh my god.

Your 16 year old brother has a hairy chest, yes, that is normal, nowadays boys are becoming hairier earlier and earlier in life. These guys should NOT shave their chests, that is just silly trend which I hope will not last long.

I also have a hairy chest, that is why I shave my butt and walk backwards, so it looks like I have a hairy back instead.

Chest hair (like all body hair) is fundamentally different than that which grows on the head. It's essentially beard hair, and tend to be more corse and, of course, not as long.

Body hair is a product of two factors: androgen production, and your sensitivity to it. If a person has high androgen levels and moderate to high sensitivity, he/she tends to be hairier. The general patterns are around the nipples, between the pecs, over the pecs, and on the stomach. Women with high levels of androgens (or who are highly sensitive) will sometimes grow a moustache and will get hairs around their nipples from time to time.

That's correct bayareaguy, must be quite a lot of people on this post, including my self who have high androgen levels an high sensitivity levels as well, also high testosterone levels lead to men having hairy chests and bodies in general.

you shouldn't shave your chest

Fully agree with you Boredguy, like you I have never shaved or trimmed the hairs on my chest, I am 56 years old, some of the hairs on my chest are as long as 6" but the majority are about 3 or 4 inches long.

Perhaps using the word idiot for men who shave their chest off is a bit strong, I would just say if nature endowed a man with a hairy chest, why should he want to shave it off, it just seems to me a bit odd. Are men being influenced by all that media thing about shaving, some of the adds featuring hairless men are men who are naturally smooth, rather that men who shave their body hair off.. Boys do not have body hair, men do, so why should a 14 year old take off his body hair? does he think it is fashionable, or does he want to stay looking like a little boy.
Comment Hidden (show)
bayareaguy, the word idiot by Jennalea was a bit 'mean' as you say, but it was her opinion of what she thinks of men who have a hairy chest, then shave the lot off. Perhaps you have a natural smooth hairless chest, I am sure she was not referring to someone like that. I personally think a man who has a hairy chest then shaves it off is being a bit childish, why does he want to remain looking like a little 10 year old boy, there are many men who have a natural smooth hairless chest would love to be hairy and think that guys who do shave the hair off are 'idiots'
Comment Hidden (show)
At least you don't have a hairy back. Keep in mind that most [young] hairy guys are aware of the fact, self-conscious about it, and tend to avoid taking their shirts off in public. It's normal in the sense that it's not weird, but it's not entirely average. You'll find some girls LIKE it, some think it's disgusting, and many don't care. Don't sweat it.

Not too many teenage boys have hairy backs even if they have hair on their chests. Where I come from in the UK practically all the men I have seen stripped off have some hair on their chests, I can't think of any guy I have seen not having a hairy chest. However, when it comes to hairy shoulders or backs, not many have that, I do have very hairy shoulders but only a light cover of hair all over my back except near my shoulders where it is a bit thicker, not sure if I would be counted on having a hairy back as it is only a light covering of hair on it.

As for waxing/shaving - in my opinion it is better to apply these methods to armpits hair rather than chest hair. Men in many countries do this and don't have these awful sweaty bushes under their arms
Comment Hidden (show)
I can tell you that I, as a 21 year old female would appreciate if you waxed. If I wanted to play with a fury rug, I would.

I am a woman who happens to love hairy men. I also think that guys who wax or shave look like idiots because the HAIR GROWS BACK. There is nothing nastier than a 5 o'clock shadow on some dude's chest. Plus if you are getting it on, I'm sure stubble hurts. Be proud of your hairiness. Display it and pimp it with the ladies. And don't listen to those who would say otherwise. They're clueless...

Love you post Jennalea, I am sure you would like me, I am NOT a idiot who waxes or shaves, I have never done that, in fact I have never even trimmed 1 hair off my body in my 56 years of life, sorry I have trimmed off a few butt hairs and I do shave my face and get a head hair cut. Apart from that I have a hairy chest, some people have compared that too a werewolf, very hairy arms, compared to a monkey by a few girls that saw me, very thick neck hair which extends down to make my shoulders very hairy and bushy, legs the same, back hair is all over but not as thick as other places,You say in your post 'be proud of your hairiness' well jennalea, I AM

Piss off, lady. That comment was just plain mean.

Not too many men shave or wax the hair UNDER their arms, however, most women do that, you don't often see a woman with hairy arm pits nowadays, but on the other hand I have not seen any man who has no hair under his arms.
