Hearing voices of my friends, family, and unfamiliar people

This happens when I'm just lying in bed, usually wide awake. I can hear the voices of friends, family, acquaintances, or people I don't remember, saying random things.

I can, most of the time, control who I hear, how many voices, the theme of what they say, ect. But I'm completely awake and aware.

I've heard that this is a common occurrence for others just before falling asleep, but this can go one for close to a half hour before I resign to let myself stop hearing them and fall asleep.

Is this normal?

If you have an active mind, it is common for it to be a little over active when first lie down for the night. What you are describing is clearly just inner dialogue of your own mind as it tries to settle down for the night. If you find it troublesome, try restraining yourself to only relaxing activities for an hour before bed such as reading. Going to bed right after watching an exciting TV show or having an involved conversation makes your mind much more "chatty" in the evening. It's nothing to worry about though.
