How bad is a mouthful of laundry detergent

I'm not exactly sure how it happened but a group of my friends were together hanging around at my place. And then the guys were just fooling around and told this one guy to drink laundry detergent for fifty dollars he was asking for. They weren't serious about it, they were going to give it to him but I guess he drank a mouthful anyway. He started choking and gagging afterwards and poured it out. We weren't in the same room when it happened but we heard them yelling 'oh you're a idiot why would you do that?' so we went to see what happened and they told us.
Will a mouthful do any harm? Will it just make him sick or could it kill him?

He went home afterwards even though some people told him he should go to the hospital to make sure he was OK. All he said was that it was fine and said it wasn't enough to do any harm. He laughed and said we should worry if he had drank the whole glass but not from a measly mouthful. He coughed a lot for the rest of the night and said his throat hurt and that was it. He said he was fine. One of the guys were driving him home too.
Do you think it's normal?

A mouthfull wont be too bad but some household chemicals a mouthfull is enough to kill you. Anyone who drinks detergent is an idiot
dont drink anything thats under the sink!
take some vinegar afterwards, you'll be fine, not really but it should neutralise it
no it wont hurt him if its normal household detergent.it may just make him crap for a while.hospitals actually give a enema called a soap suds enema to clean patiens out.so he more or less just had an enema from the opposite end.

on a larger scale maybe someday darwin will kick in and the idiot will drink something much worse.
All drinking vinegar will do is dehydrate him. Plenty of water and flush it through.

hello nealy!
Two suggestions:

(1) Read the information on the bottle regarding accidental ingestion. Some poisons can be neutralized by consuming water, milk, or other products; some are worsened by these actions.
(2) Call your Poison Control Center. They are usually VERY helpful about these things, and can actually be a life-saver.

From what you say here, your friend will probably be OK, but it would still be a good idea to check the bottle to see what they advise, just for future reference. Hopefully, you and your friends will refrain from bets like this in the future.

think you'd want to neutralise something as basic as a cleaning agent b4 it goes through ur system tho lol
