Part of the gag reflex might be something you can control mentally with practice. But I have also read that the gag reflex kicks in because your throat muscles try to swallow but you stop that action because you know you can't swallow what's there. Try letting the swallow motion complete itself. Of course what's there won't go down, but supposedly trying to act like its a real swallow can help you avoid discomfort.

My favorite piece of blowjob advice though is don't try to deep-throat it.
