I hate being called smart

So I get pretty good grades in school and I help a lot of my friends understand their homework and classwork. When we're hanging out on the weekends or after class and someone mentions my grade on a quiz or how I helped them I always hear "oh, you're so smart." They all seem to think it's a compliment, but I just feel like crying whenever people call me smart. I feel like I'm two dimensional and not really a friend, only someone considered 'smart'. I want to be liked for other qualities. Thoughts?

It sucks to be called smart, people expect much more from you and when you screw up its much worse. Im good at what little I do know, but im not a god and cant be awesome at everything. It blows to be considered smart when you know you arent even the best at what you do, computers for me.

I have the same thing, i'm in high school with like high expectations and whenever i get a good score people are like "your so smart" "clever" "you boffin" stuff like that and i hate it too. Coz a my school its not a reputation to be smart. I try to just not draw attention to myself so no one notices.

To me, it really depends on the person calling me smart. Also, a lot of people confuse smarts with hard work. If I take a test that is all about memorization, I don't want to be called "smart" if I do well.

I feel like this because when I am surrounded by, excuse my negativity, but, morons. I'd say it's normal to an extent

In child development I sit next to two freshman girls that don't know what the uterus does! It's when people like that call me smart that I get irritated by it.

How old are you? I ask because when I was in middle school on up people use to call me "School Girl" and "Cute", not mean but in a way where they were concluding I was different from them. I wanted to be "Popular" and "beautiful". Though everyone in school always liked me, I did feel different. As I got older and now that I am in college and in the professional workforce, being called smart is a cool thing and I love it. When people talk about my looks now, they still say cute but they also say "sweet" and "innocent" and a lot of women say they wish they looked as adorable as I do because it make me look young. Anyway, my point is someday you will find value in being called "smart". At this time it may feel awkward to stand out for something like being smart but as you grow older you will realize it is good to stand out for something as positive as intelligence. There are a lot of people who feel they aren't even acknowledged let alone called anything positive. If you want to be known for your other values try expressing them. Until than hang in there, you might love being smart someday!

Don't think like that calling you smart is because that much you have helped them in their work and that much have attracted them by your work so feel it happy. But this not become you a head weight person so be careful off that

golden in right. no way can being smart be a bad thing. life is easier, all the way around, when you are smart. things that you can figure out in an instant, some poor dummy struggles with.

even if it is the only compliment you recieve, i am sure your friends do like you for who you are. after all, you do things together that don't involve you helping them with schoolwork, right?

Whats wrong with being smart? I am often argued with but I am happy with who I am and my choices. I know that if I was rather dumb, I wouldn't be able to do the stuff I can do so I would perfer to be smarter even if I am bashed for it.

Be happy of who you are and realise that you will hopefully have a better life than the retards who bash you because you are smarter than them.

just go with it, it makes them feel better about themself. they think if they were on the same level as you they would be coined lazy.

I get this all the time! It truly sux :( personally, I don't feel very smart so when people call me that, instead of seeing it as a compliment I sort of feel like they are joking, even if they are being sincere. Also, at my school, being smart isn't exactly "cool" so it's like they are making fun of me by saying that.
I know how you feel :)

It's annoying because it's making a value judgement. There are so many different types of intelligence to assume someone can just quantify your intelligence based on a stupid test, grade, or whatever else is so unbelievably near-sighted. You just think, "How do you know?" Being called "smart" in society just means, "You are similar to me and I approve of you" or "You meet my expectations" And even if I was "smart", why would I need your judgement or approval of me? Also, many times it's assuming I am gifted or have something that you don't, which is not true at all.
