That is a good point. They don't care about the dog dying, they just don't want to see it die.

Did this happen because your dog ate too fast' Look into this special type of bowl called the "brake-fast bowl" its special designed to slow down a dogs eating pattern and help stop choking and bloat.

May I ask what the dog was eating at the time' If it was regular dog food then perhaps your dog is eating too fast. Some dogs eat like it's the first meal they've had in days. If it was from large chunks of meat or something similar, then it was from the dog not chewing it well enough and you could just refrain from feeding large pieces of food. I tried some things from that dog whisperer show and they worked. My dog used to eat really fast when I first got him. I take him for long runs to work his energy out then feed him only when he's in a calm state. As soon as he starts eating fast again, I take the food bowl away until he calms down. He now eats normally. Then again the situation with your dog could be an accidental fluke. I can guarantee that your not developing a deep seeded phobia. Your just worried about your beloved pet. The fear will go away eventually. Also, dogs are more likely to choke on toys or even eat them so supervise them when they're playing with non edible toys. Raw hide chew bones are ok because they can usually only chew off little pieces at a time.

Can't help with the name of the phobia, but... I can certainly understand why you are fearful of them choking since they did once. I would think that instead of staying away while they are eating that you would want to be near them to be sure they don't choke again and if they do, you can help them. It would kill me if something happened to my dog like choking on food and I wasn't there to help him. Is it really the fear of him choking again, or perhaps the fear that you won't know what to do if he does'' You can talk to your vet who will be more than happy to demonstrate to you how to help him should it happen.
