I have to do everything symmetrically! For instance, if I'm lying in bed at night and I have to scratch an itch on my big toe, then I'll have to scratch that same spot on my other big toe or it won't feel 'right' and I'll go crazy with anxiety. Same thing with my ears: if I have to take out an earplug during the night and scratch inside my ear, then I'll have to take out the other earplug and scratch inside my other ear, or else it will immediately start itching anyway...what the hell is this? I've been doing it all my life and it doesn't make any sense at all.
Do you think it's normal?

Sounds like a reasonably mild case of Obsessive/Compulsive Disorder. You should see a psychiatrist who can prescribe a low-dose of medication that should take care of it. Counseling techniques such as cognitive therapy can help also, but OCD is one of the list of disorders that has it's origin more in neurochemistry than psychology, so medication tends to be much more effective.
Do you have to pick each nostril too? What about things you've only got one of? What happens then? Do you go insane?

I've only got one person annoying the f**k out of me right now, so if I kicked the s**t out of you, I'd have to do it symmetrically; i.e., pound both of your eyes, smash both sides of your skull, etc. Then I'd feel 'normal' again...so the answer is no, I wouldn't go insane...
ROFL!!! ;-) I think it's cool that things need to go symmetrically for you. I was just piss taking, haha. Don't take it personally it wasn't meant like that. It's really fine to be symmetrical like you are, it's probably not common though, and if it doesn't affect your life in a major way then who cares?
I mark it up to mild OCD, I am the same way and it used to be worse. I have never been treated for it though.
haha i do the same thing ive always been like that and a long time ago i was diagnosed with ocd and nuthings ever helped it i duno if anything actually can and i often wonder if ppl notice me doing those things and think im crazy lol but ya get some meds maybe they'll help u
i got my chest tattooed. left side first... then right. i felt really awkward until it was all done.
I am the same way, like if I go to the bathroom and I have to piss, i wont leave until i take a shit too. It really sucks cause some times I dont have to take a shit but I still just sit there and wait tell it comes.
For instance; one friday night, I was at a concert, and I was drinking alot of beer, and loan behold i had to piss half way through the show. I sat there trying to shit through the rest of the show. Then security had to through me out cause I refused to leave at closing cause I still was not able to shit. :/
I feel better knowing that you share the same problem.

Yeah, Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder. Funny though...
