I pick at spots inside my hair =O

I keep doing this. I will sit somewhere, and run my fingers through my hair, and if I feel a spot or a scab, I will pick at it. But now i seem to be picking at my own hair roots! So now, if I've picked out a spot type thing, it will actually be the root of my hair... with the strand of hair attached to it! Everytime I do it my mum pushes at my hand and tells me to stop... I've tried... but I can't, I don't even realise I'm doing it half the time, I only realise when I'm with people, and I've got a piece of hair between my fingers...
My hair naturally falls out, and I'm just making it worse!
eek! what should I do?
Do you think it's normal?

you just have to find a way of getting out of the habit, you are probably not realising your doing it.
Maybe a manifestation of trichotillomania, a form of OCD. Treatment is available if you decide you need it.
try to be conscience of when you're doing it...the more you notice you're doing it, the easier it'll be to stop yourself.
that's exactly what happens to me. now, i'm thinking that i'm going bald
you may have obsessive compulsive disorder. go to a psychiatrist and find out.
My best friend used to do this with her eyebrow. She had to apply vaseline to it to remind her that she was doing it. In about a month of wet eyebrows, she stopped. As vaseline would probably not be the best thing for hair, I would reccomend hair gel or a hat for about a month or more.
I used to do it too. I took years for me to stop and for the little scar spots on my head to regrow my signature blonde hair. Get a rubber band to pop your wrist with every time you feel the urge to pick. AND....it sounds icky, but neosporin on healing scabs works wonders.

Please don't pick for as long as I did-I hope you find a way to stop! :]

KAPUS
wear hats for a while till youll stop doing it.
I do it too but because I like to chew on them. I think it is gross but I cant break the habit. I use to bite my nails and other things. I think its partly a habit and partly a strong addiction.
I do something similar to this and have to focus to just not do it. I do believe this is OCD related and a dr. could offer some help, but it's all about you and how badly you want to be in control of your actions. It does sound related to trichotillomania which can cause severe damage to your scalp and your mental well being. I bet you feel ashamed after you do it, or embarrassed if you think people see you. I hide my hair twirling and do not do it in public. Most of all, I know I want to be in Control of my actions so I can just stop the action. It's like biting your nails, once you realize you're doing it, just stop! Mind over matter...

Does anyone watch the new show Obsessed on A&E?
I've done little OCD things like that all my life. My earliest memories as a kid include picking my nails, nose, etc. Avoid doing it in public at all costs. Set a challenge for yourself. Stop all of it - completely. Don't ever do it anywhere, no matter how much you want to.
