ours knows that if we put on pants (we usually wear shorts or pj bottoms when hanging around the house) it means we're going outside. and that she gets to go along.
unless we're getting dressed for work.
she also knows that when we move the carrier to the door it means a trip to the doggy park and she gets very excited. ;-)
