The Beach Boys were more than just a surf band. They started out playing that style of music, but then progressed later on into something more complex, varied and downright beautiful.

The Beach Boys music will continue to live on. Their vocal harmonies, their complex arrangements (largely due in part to genius and bandleader Brian Wilson) and their commitment to making the most memorable music is what they will be ultimately known for when they've been long and gone from this Earth.

Songs like Wouldn't It Be Nice, Good Vibrations, Heroes and Villains and countless others are recommended for any listener. Albums such as Pet Sounds and Smile are recommend-worthy.

And to get to your question, you don't need to listen to them to be a true surfer. Just so long as you 'Stay true to your school', lmao.

And yes Lula, I still love you, although you disagree, hahaha.

It is kinda shitty what Brian Wilson did to himself though, he definitely had talent....

I'm pretty sure people have been surfing for longer than the Beach Boys have been alive. Sorry if I'm taking this poll to literal :P

I've never surfed before :(

I don't see how you would have to listen to any specific kind of music to be a surfer. Especially something as old as the beach boys! (granted I do like the beach boys lolz)

How is age relevant?

Telling an entire generation that they can't be real surfers unless they listen to a band from more than a generation ago, that makes no sense.

How are the beach boys relevant in whether or not a person is a real surfer?

"Especially something as old as the beach boys!"

Sounded as if you were dismissing them because they are a band from the 60's.

I might have missunderstood what you were trying to say.

Listening to the Beach BOys doesn't make you a surfer.

Just like listening to pro-nazism music doesn't make you a nazi etc etc

I could have worded that poorly, I like the Beach Boys very much! I just don't feel that any one band should define an entire subset of people lolz.

So by that standard I guess I need to listen to Hasselhoff to be German right?

No, just no.

Ehh I surf and I dont listen to any of the music that is considered "surf" music at all.

I listen to Sesame Street rhymes, "1,2 buckle my shoe, 3,4 open the door..."

That shit rocks.
