I have my own beliefs (which I won't go into here because it's not really worth it) and happen to be going out with a Christian.

I told him a few days ago about how my brother had been kicked out of his assisted living for being verbally abusive to the staff and I had a job interview today.

He's prayed for me over both situations without me asking him to and (in my mind) without my permission.

I'm especially annoyed about him praying for my brother's situation and hoping against all hope that my brother eventually realises just how sick and evil he has been and that he receives plenty enough punishment to make him realise just how his existence has ruined my life and the lives of many others. I've asked a couple of questions about him on IIN (You'll find them easily enough, I believe).

I know I should be grateful at how kind my boyfriend is being but I'd rather he didn't do it....

It's normal. I don't think that it is anything to be upset about. If prayer to a deity that is God is against your beliefs then by all accounts it shouldn't mean anything to you.

It makes me VERY uncomfortable. I don't want to insult anyone's religion and I know they're doing what they think is best but I don't think they realise just how strange this can make an atheist feel.

Same here! I wouldn't really care if they didn't tell me about it, but I hate it when people tell me that they did or are going to pray for me. I sort of wonder if they do it because they know I'm an atheist and they're flaunting they're religion, or if they say that to everybody. It just seems really in your face.

Yes it's normal I had a super hardcore christian friend pray for me when things weren't going so well, as an atheist, this annoys me. The reason why I personally don't like it is because I feel like my having prayers for me, it makes me part of being a christian, which I want NO part in. I don't support Christianity at all and don't want any involvement in it.

I think it's normal that you feel this way. I really don't like when christians try to pray for people's souls and so on. There's something irritating about it and it makes me feel extremely uncomfortable.

Perfectly normal. I'd be offended, too! I don't want someone praying to such a hateful being (if there is one) because they pity me.

In your situation, I would probably find this slightly annoying. I would appreciate that someone cared enough to do what they thought might help me though.

I really don't understand what the issue is, unless your boyfriend is telling you that you should pray too. I don't think he should need permission to pray for you, it doesn't make you involved in Christianity by association. If someone prayed for me I'd probably think it was nice and not give it a second thought.

It seems you're actually worried his prayers will be heard in regards to your brother which is odd if you don't share your boyfriend's beliefs.
