Imaginary friends

Ok, I'm 23 years old, and I have a very elaborate fantasy life with story lines and consistent characters. I could tell you their names ages, histories, etc. I like to imagine myself interacting with these "people" in a very real fashion. I will also stress that I am very aware that they are not real, and, no, I do not actually see them, hear them, etc. I don't hear voices in my head, and I'm not schizophrenic, so don't bother asking.

I also have many real, deep friendships with other real people my age, so it's not like I just need to get out more. I do enjoy writing fiction, and maybe it's just a sign that I should be doing more of that. Thoughts?
Do you think it's normal?

Character development is the hardest part of writing. Sounds like you have a great start. I strongly recommend channeling your fantasy life in that direction.
It's probably cool as long as the friends remain a mental escape and not a substitute for real people.

I'm 23 also and I do similar things. Typically I take actual movie or TV characters (or famous people) and elaborate on whatever stories are already out there. Put pen to paper and you call that fanfiction. I agree with the person above - you're basically imagining your own story instead of reading someone else's. Personally I think it's totally normal, it's just not something many people fess up to.
You should play Dungeons and Dragons. If you're really good with creating realistic people like this, you'd have a lot of fun.

It's how i got started in writing. If you're having a hard time staying motivated to write, I would suggest screenwriting. It's easier to finish a screenplay than a novel and there are lots of contests to enter in. You may even get your work noticed.

Hey, thanks for all the replies, and I'm really glad to hear there are other people around who can relate to this. I've never been able to talk to any of my... ahem... real friends about this. ;) I even have other friends who write, but I've never been able to tackle the subject with them, so it's fantastic to hear that that's how some of you got started writing, and that I'm not completely crazy.

In response to what has been said, I agree that I really should focus more attention on my writing and funnel a lot of this stuff into it.

And yes, I have played D&D, and I think it's awesome. :)

And, finally, no, this has never been a substitute for real people, although I'll admit that it has occasionally been a nice escape from real people, but I personally think that's an entirely different thing.

I agree with most of the other posts. You should indeed channel this into writing.

That's what I did! It's a great way to release creativity, and just to have fun overall.

Live by it. Die by it.

You could make money on it, and why not. You work hard on it!

Good luck friend. :)
