Is Is Normal That I Never Had A Sweet Sixteen?

When I was sixteen years old, my family wasn't in the position to have a giant or wondrous party for my birthday. I got to hang out with a friend at my house and then we went out to eat at a pretty southern homestyle restaurant.

Now, one of my younger friends is having a really big sweet sixteen party when she's inviting ten of her friends to a waterpark and then to a really fancy restaurant for dinner.

Is it normal that I never had one? And on that note, is it normal that I think it's kinda stupid to do so much for a certain birthday number?

Do people really do that in America?

Yes they do. IMO the values are totally warped spending so much on a few hours of a party. There are so many more reasonable things one could do with these large sums of money spent often 25k-100k plus at least in the New York area and some people take out loans to do it on top of not spending their money on wiser things for the long term!

Jesus Christ! On an basically insignificant birthday?? I hear of people doing that for weddings and I think they're fools...but for a birthday?? That's like...the price of some houses in some parts of America...

I don't understand people :/

I 100% agree! You can put a down-payment on a house OR in case of sweet sixteen pay for part or all of college. The values are warped IMO.

Oh ya they do. I know a girl who recently had a big sweet 16 party at the same establishment that my brother got married at. Catering, a DJ, the girl even got the bridal suite to get ready in. So I'm guessing it cost many many thousands of dollars. Like possibly in the realm of $10,000. It's crazy.

Fuck...

Even if I had that mind of money to waste...that is way too much of a waste.

I didn't have a 16th. But for my 18th, we played pass the parcel and attacked each other with water bombs :D

The mother even bought all the dresses for the girls in "the court". That seems to big these days too, having a court. I dunno man.

I had to Google pass the parcel. I'd totally play that on my next birthday.

In the NYC area is often 25k - 100k plus but often at least 50k - 100k plus.... it's insane

I'm from NJ and I find things to be pretty expensive here, but it's nothing compared to NY. I don't know how people afford anything there.

That is an insane amount to spend on anything, let alone a party for some spoiled twirp. Good grief.

Hey there. It's totally normal that you didn't have one. You also have a good head on your shoulders. It is as you said kinda stupid do do so much for a certain birthday number IMO as well. People can pay college tuition or put down payments on houses for the amount they spend on sweet sixteens and weddings and other like events. Some even go into 25k -100k or more debt over such parties. To me that's insane to do over one day that goes by in a flash, when you could be paying for college, buying a house or just saving some money for a rainy day and to go into debt over it oh my god. It sounds like you have very practical values!

Just a side note: I did my wedding on the cheap. We did it in a friends huge backyard with a tent in case of rain, I bought a reasonable dress, hired only a semi-professional photographer, a dj and a very reasonable restaurant to cater/deliver. We paid a very low price. What matter is your life being happy not a big party like a sweet sixteen. In our case what matters is we have a great marriage that's lasted. Some people have big weddings and are divorced in a year or two. What matters is not some party, but how you live your life :)! You're a smart cookie!

I'm British and I never did it.

Some people lack the money, the time and, tbh, the abundance of friends.

It all depends on what you prefer. Me personally, I'd MUCH rather have a nice, intimate night with a few close friends for dinner, or maybe go to the club with a few friends. It doesn't need to be a massive thing. It's the company that counts, not what you're doing.

Yes, unfortunately growing up as a male at age 16
me or my sister had a sweet sixteen birthday party
there was lot things i done without growing up cause
simply my parents couldn't afford it so we had to do
whatever we could to make things work out.

Perfectly normal. I don't know anyone who actually had a sweet sixteen and I think people who care WAY too much about birthdays are overrated. I also agree that it's stupid to do so much for a certain birthday so yeah, I'd say nothing is wrong with you. In fact, you're smarter than most.

I never had one but I also never gave it much thought I went to a few tho. Some were quite elaborate while others were more like go to a amusement park then dinner and a slumber party.

I think some ppl make a big fuss becos its sort of a milestone but I never gave it much thought becos my family didn't do much even for the traditional holidays and birthdays were just a cake and a couple gifts never elaborate affairs.

If you feel slighted becos you didn't get one I'm sorry you feel that way sometimes parents can be clueless about what is meaningful to there kids. I know mine certainly could be that way.

I never had one and I wasn't really interested in having one. I pretty much did the same as you.

I thought Sweet Sixteens were only in trash disney movies.. it's still trash though, waterpark? She's fucking 16, shouldn't she go to some fancy hotel and invite her friends and some guys to party?
