A little over 4 years ago, I had woke up, went towards the gerbil cage and I noticed that the female cat (we used to have) was inside the gerbil cage. I was thinking "omg, how did she get in there?" The cage was metal connected to the plastic bottom. The only opening was at the top. Even if, she did open the top of the cage, there's no way she'd fit in it. I had asked my brother, "Did you put the cat in the gerbil cage?" He had replied, "No, I didn't." I had asked the same question, about 4 more times and still he said no. I did not believe him and still don't. I know he didn't like the cat that much, so that is a reason he could of done that. I'm not sure, how long they were in the cage, but they were both alive. It doesn't make sense, that a cat would be in a gerbil cage and not eat the gerbil.

I think you got the right suspect with your first thought...of course he'd deny, doesn't change the facts.
