Is it normal for me to stay at my job when...

- Okay, so I should probably mention that I am 17 and working as a Lifeguard at my community's pool. I try my best to enforce the rules, but I'm the only lifeguard there. It's an "L" shaped pool which requires 3 lifeguards on duty, but 2 is acceptable at minimum. The most amount of people a lifeguard should watch over is 25,but I'm watching over 40 kids and their parents don't pay attention at all. I am often mistaken as the "babysitter" at the pool, but then again most lifeguards are. There is no umbrella so I work for 8 hours in the sun with one measly 20 minute break.

All I want to do is make sure everyone is safe, but at an L shaped pool and working alone in these conditions, it's difficult... I even asked for advice from my lifeguard instructor, (whom I learned everything I know), and she told me if they aren't willing to change conditions I should leave. The thing is theres blind spots everywhere, and struggling swimmers are hard to point out since I have a lot of fakers, (that cry for help or pretend they are struggling in the water, and when I ask, "are you okay?!" they nod, giggle and swim off). So, I am generally concerned that someone is going to drown on my watch because of the amount of children and adults I need to watch is nearly double what I am supposed to supervise...

I tried to explain to my employer that lifeguards need to rotate every hour to stay clear-headed and focus on the job, and how dangerous it is to only have one lifeguard on duty while there are so many swimmers about, so I said they either need to hire another lifeguard (additional), or at least close the deep end of the pool for me to be able to supervise everyone with no blind spots, (as my instructor told me to say), but they said they refuse to make any changes.

I was warned by my instructor that if they refused then I need to walk away because if someone is injured, or (god forbid), they drown, then I am 100% liable and can be sued, (even my family), for everything we own. But even after all of this, I still really need a job, and where I live, it is hard enough to find a job; especially as a lifeguard...

So I need to ask, should I keep the job, or should I finish this week and get the hell outta there?

(btw: very sorry this is so long, I just need advice)

That's a hell of a lot for a kid to be "responsible" for. You should get a different job. You don't need that sort of stress. Plenty of other stresses to choose from.

thanks =) I kinda feel the same way, and I'm too concerned of being held liable for people's injuries, especially when the place I work at doesn't help make anything easier. I just really don't wanna have to quit, since it won't look good to other jobs

if you decide to stay - put something in writing to management about the lack of lifeguard staff, i would do that before i worked another shift, in the letter state the necessary quota of guards needed for this pool, say you are doing your best but you have concerns for the swimmers safety, keep a copy and if an accident happens you are covered

I really like your idea, but even if I have something in writing and they didn't listen to me, (which so far they didn't), I'm still liable if someone gets hurt or drowns, but I do believe that the community itself whom I'm working for would still get fair share of the blame for not hiring the amount of staff required or following safety guidelines =/

Sounds like its not safe to swim today

Sounds like your first experience working for jerks! It's normal, continue working, making money, but document your grievances with email or written notice of problems, that relieves you of most responsibility of negligence

Brush up on your law, take plenty of notes and pictures. So if something were to happen you have proof the company did not take the necessary measure to ensure your ability. Kids are kids, they'll troll you like that, just let it go, it's part of the job.

It just seems too much for one person. Even thought chances are nothing serious will happen, if it did are you really qualified? Its a lot of resposibility. I personally would not want that job. Try to find another job first and give two weeks notice of you can. If you do quit, at least it was for a good reason.

I would be considered qualified if I were only responsible for 25 people at a time, but thats unfortunately not the case. If there were just one more lifeguard, then the chances of anyone drowning would be at a bare minimum, but they refuse to hire anymore lifeguards. =/ and I think I'm going to let them know I'm quitting tomorrow, but I'll finish up for the rest of the week, get my pay for my hours this week and by next week I'll find another job... just not one that pays as well... =/

Actually you probably shouldn't mention that you are 17. Just lie and say 18, that doesn't change the story.

Nobody really, it is just a little silly to go around saying it in your posts.

Hi there, this seems like its alot on your shoulders. You really have to leave this job. I mean, theres alot of jobs that have their downfalls like, having a boss as a bully, knowing that people are stealing and getting away with it, getting paid peanuts for doing twice as much work etc, but in your case, someones life is at risk. If this did happen, it wouldn't be your fault, because you're just doing what you're told, but even still, it will haunt you for the rest of your life. Your boss has no right to put you in that situation. You have to alert the authorities about this. A cheeky way to get money out of them is to sue them lol. They deserve it anyway. But I'd strongly suggest you put in notice and try find a job within that time. Just make sure you definately let someone know so that when you leave, they're not doing the same thing.

thanks for the advice; i just finished up my last few weeks, and it finally closed up a week after labor day. they said next summer they'd be getting more lifeguards and THEN they asked me for my advice to make the pool safer and tell them what they're doing wrong; (which they should have thought of that before even opening =__=); but on the condition that they change everything and hire the appropriate amount of lifeguards i will work there (which i hopefully won't forget), but if they DON'T change anything, I will gladly inform them to look for another lifeguard elsewhere before next summer.

Before you give up try notifying the local police, and urge the police to talk about the management staff of the pool about the legality of not providing proper life guarding staff. If that doesn't work you can go to the local news paper as an anonymous life guard and get them to print a story about the lack of care in providing the proper proportion of life guards per swimmer. If the local paper runs a story the whole town would hear and know what's going on, forcing the management to think twice. This newspaper angle typically works quite well. No one likes bad publicity.

unfortunately, since it's a private community, the police won't enforce things like this, but I did call the PA dep. of health, (which is usually who to call for this type of thing), but they didn't really help, they just said that they'd transfer me to a voicemail and he might get back to me; so I didn't think I'd find help there; especially since they usually only refer to public rules; though the pool is private
