Even if you don't 'need' him, the fact that you wanted him there should have been enough for him. He should have actually wanted to be with you at that time. He obviously doesn't care enough about you.

Sometimes I don't need people, but he is just using asociality as a scapegoat for being an asshole. Find another boyfriend (or girlfriend if you want). He obviously doesn't give two shits about you or what you need.

Was he abused in his past? Did people he cared about prove to be unreliable? If so, then his "problem" is stemming from a psychological source. Try to get him help.

He only said that to remove himself from the guilt he feels but hadn't dealt with. If my bf did that to me, he'd end up with a street lamp shoved very far up his ass.

People do need each other. It's a basic human need. However, you do not "need" every person in your life. There are ones who can be let go. Was your boyfriend insensitive? Absolutely. Should he be called out on it? For sure. You don't need him in the basic sense of the word and you were looking for him to provide emotional support that he clearly was not interested in providing. If that is something that is important to you then you need to talk to him about it and if he can't do that then it is time to move on. Just tell him you can be unhappy all on your own and you don't need his help.
