I'm 21 and raising my 5 year old daughter on my own, so yeah I don't know jackshit about what the hell I'm doing. I'm vegan, but I let her eat meat until she chooses not to. I've been trying to introduce her to foods that are better for her, she's thin so I wanted her to gain a bit, so I've been trying to feed her grilled ground beef and grilled chicken breast. She pretends that she can't swallow it and that it tastes awful and she fake gags, but it's just literal straight up beef and chicken, bland as hell it can't be that bad. She's a skinny kid, and really just eats "kid food" like nuggets, hot dog, grilled cheese, and then fruits and veggies. I'm tryna get her healthy and gain some weight on her, advice?

Yes, she is a kid.

You're a great father.

Not too many parents are flexible with their children; it's either their way or no way. Its great you're actually letting your daughter have choices at such an age, and getting to know her as she grows instead of seeing her as a miniature version of yourself.

Anyway, just make it fun. Children her age just like to play, so if you turn chores or eating healthy food (no eating races, she could choke) into a game of some sort with a lot of imagination behind it and a story, she'll probably eat it, especially if you play along (so you may have to eat a little meat for her sake).

I assumed that OP is a mom. What father would actually care if his daughter was "too thin"?

Oops. Fathers can worry about their child's weight too, but you're right that we're assuming.

To Topic creator/OP: You're a great mother or father.

Yeah, I'm a dad, and thank ya

OP is not a great parent, whatever gender s/he is, how do you work that out?

I'm a fuckin' guy. Would you lay off? Obviously I know that I'm in the wrong. Is it not clear that I'm actively trying to fix my mistakes? Who the fuck are you to come down on me for this? This isn't exactly easy.

I understand the frustration, but try not to let her get to you. Ellenna is 60 something, set in her ways, and very jaded.

I don't have kids but I watched in a movie where dad tries to feed her daughter pretending that spoon is airplane and flies inside his little daughters mouth.
I guess playing and making it fun would help.

Maybe you could try being creative and make food into funny faces or cartoon characters? I've seen some of that online, it might encourage your kid to eat it :)

You're vegan and feeding your kid nuggets and hot dogs? That's really healthy ...... NOT.

You've already established bad eating habits for her so you're going to have to wean her off the rubbish and on to a normal balanced diet. That "kid food" is addictive for kids, it makes them very lazy about eating real food, but whose responsibility is that?

The kid eating meat like hot dogs is not bad for her. And just because he is vegan doesnt mean she has to eat vegan. The kid isn't eating bags of chips and chugging pop its just meat.

Hot dogs & nuggets contain rubbish meat, floor sweepings and I didn't suggest the child should be raised vegan.

So every brand in every country has rubbish meat really apparently there are not standards anymore for whats allowed in food. Whats shes eating is fine for her

It is NOT fine for a child to be eating rubbish and establishing crap eating habits to early in life.

I was really just trying to make her happy at the time of incorporating these foods into her diet, I also barely had any money, now I have more of an opportunity to set a better lifestyle for her. I'm in the process of switching her to cleaner eating, hence the very bland and lean meats. I'm vegan for the ethics, but obviously care more about her having a stable solid diet and body and I think excess/high levels of protein and dairy would put her on a good foundation. When she's older I'll give her the option of switching to a raw plant based diet.

I've acknowledged my fault in her current diet.

Hot dogs and nuggets are bland and lean meats? No, they're full of fat and hot dogs contain preservatives and (obviously) red dye .....

I think you need to do some nutritional research because you're feeding your kid rubbish at a crucial time in her life: excess/high levels of ANYTHING isn't a good idea, the point is to give her a BALANCED healthy diet. Raw plant based? maybe, as long as she's getting all the other food elements she needs.

I meant the ground beef and grilled chicken are bland and lean. No reason to be a cunt. I'm trying my best here.

How am I being a "cunt"? If you mean that as an insult you're being ridiculous: I think cunts are beautiful!

All she wants to eat is junk like a stupid kid. She doesn't know any better. Give her no food if she's going to be a brat til she eats what you tell her to, itll be better in the long run. Being too skinny at 5 means at least she won't be too morbidly obese when she starts eating the garbage they feed kids in school

It's the parent who's stupid, not the kid: she wouldn't be choosing junk if it weren't offered to her.

Too skinny may mean malnourishment and with this parent in charge of the kid's diet nothing would surprise me.

Yeah I'll be packing her lunch probs

Probably smart. Honestly I dont know anything about kids but they're really bad at lying and manipulation when they're that young because they aren't really too smart. If you know she's faking the gagging stuff just call her on it and being a kid she just thinks thats evidence that you are all knowing.

Children, deep down, want to please you. Make sure you praise her for eating good foods more than you punish her for bad. The best book for any parent, surprisingly enough, is "How to Win Friends and Influence People".
