Depends on what he means. Does he work for the money to go in the house? If so, then what he actually said isn't that bad. He'd be working for the money, and you'd be looking after the child, like nature intended. You can't expect him to work and look after the child while you don't work and have time to do it.
If you both work, then perhaps quit your career? Your husband didn't say he would leave you if you did, just that he wouldn't be taking care of it (obviously hysically) until a certain age.
If you work and he doesn't, then he's a bit of an ass.
If he's working to gain the money for the household, then I think you should be stepping up to the responsibility of looking after the child you want.
