Is it normal that I have no ambition?

I am a 20-something male from the United States.

I had excellent test scores throughout my high school career (frequently the best in my class), but generally poor overall grades because I was always too lazy to do my homework and get projects done on time. My teachers were always very frustrated with me. I have never attended college, nor do I plan to. I work part time at a department store and make $8 an hour.

Now here's the point of my story: I don't wan't anything more than this in my life.

I have no desire to make more money. I have many interests and hobbies, but nothing that requires any significant amount of money. I have no mouths to feed but my own, and that is how I plan to keep things.

I have no desire for prestige. In fact, I cannot remember a single moment in my life where I really felt pride (or shame) of any kind. I believe that I am completely indifferent to both praise and criticism.

I have no desire to contribute anything meaningful to society. In fact, I don't really care about "society" at all. I readily admit that I am a rather unimportant person as far civilization is concerned. I have no useful skills of any kind, and a cheap robot could probably take over my job someday soon. I don't care.

And no, I am not a drug addict.

Is this normal?

Umm, I think that's okay. If what you already have makes you happy then you've already won. You don't need to be a company director or drive a Porsche or wear a wig and cheat on your future wife with younger women. You're already happy. And I, for one, think that's a good thing.

Sounds like your personal theme song could be "I'm Pretty Good At Drinking Beer"

It doesn't seem normal to me but then again I'm an over achiever.

Without ambitions you can fall into depression.

It may be ok for the moment but do you not think that if you do that job for another 10 years you will be extremely bored? Do you still live at home - and so don't need better wages etc? What do you think will happen when you meet Miss Right and you want to get married and provide for her?

I find this a little strange as I used my energy when I was young to work my guts out and stash the cash. However, I never had any debt and was able to buy my homes outright, which I understand is not normal for Amercians - as you live off credit.

If you have what you want then don't change. If you want time to do what you want and don't need money to do it, a low-stress low-payed part-time job seems like the right choice for your lifestyle. You seem perfectly happy, so to me that's normal.

can you live on your own off an $8 / hr job?? If that was possible I'd be doing the same thing haha. It's when you factor in the fact that I could't live in my own place (without the parents) that I feel the need to get a little more ambitious :S
