Is it normal that it's hard for me to say "I love you" to my family?

I guess my parents raised me to not be very affectionate to them because it's very difficult for me to tell them I love them. Not that I don't, but it's just super embarrassing for me. My brother's the same way, it seems. He doesn't do it either. I know a lot of people will talk to their family on the phone and then get off and say "I love you", but my family's never really been so openly affectionate like that. My parents hardly tell me either, and for the very few times that my mom said "I love you" before we got off the phone, I'd say it back all rushed-like and get off. I can't do it to my friends either! It just feels so embarrassing...

I just don't get it, especially since I have no problem like this whatsoever with my boyfriend. I'm very affectionate to him. Is this normal?

Well, it is just the way that you're raised. I know that I have a tough time saying those words to my mom on occasions. In all honesty I think that you should try to say it to your family when the moment arises. It's possible that since you're feeling this, another person in your family also has mixed feelings about saying those words.

I understand. I think some people just know love when they see it and don't have to say it.

I have the same problem. :/ it kinda sucks because I hear everyone saying I love you to their parents or vise versa and I wish I could be like that but I can't. \

I think it's the way our parents raised us. Although my parents say all the time my siblings and I aren't affectionate towards them but thats their fault!

I can express my love to my BF though just like you :)

My family and I are the exact same. My parents were raised in non-affectionate families as well so I think it's just being passed down. I'm going to try to break the cycle though! Ha. I get kinda jealous when I see super affectionate families and wish mine was like that.

Same here, its difficult to say "i love you" to my parents. My friends its completely okay, but its very difficult when i have to say it to my parents for some reason. I'm not un-greatful, i am aware they have done a lot for me and im thankful for it, but i just don't understand why its so hard for me to say "i love you" to my parents.

It's normal. My mom's side of the family says I love you ALL the time and kisses and all that..BUT my DAD's side of the family NEVER says "i love you" .....just how some families are. they show it and don't have to say it

in my family, we never say it so its awkward but my friends said it to theirs. depends . . . know what i mean
