Is it Normal to absolutely HATE Dubstep?

I'm biased because it has its roots in a music scene I really liked. Or the edge of a scene. I was into lo-fi, trip hop, blunted beats, acid jazz, but also veered into drum and bass (which dubstep seems to borrow from). We're probably still ten to fifteen years away from trip hop influences entering popular music again so, in the meantime, I'm glad part of what I liked is still influencing things.

Always nice to see someone else who likes Trip Hop. I think if we had a music swap, we'd both be happy chappies.

We're a rare breed, and I really have no idea why more people don't love Trip Hop. It's big, cinematic, clever, experimental, draws from some amazing influences and - for some reason - all Trip Hop you hear is written by intelligent people. Where there are lyrics, they actually mean something (as opposed to just whatever word would rhyme).

I like post Trip Hop too. If I ever get my arse in gear and start writing music again, it'll sound like Trip Hop.

You got any slightly rarer Trip Hop you'd recommend beyond the obvious candidates? You've probably heard of them but as a starting point, I'm going to say Whale. They worked with Tricky so it's not completely out there (despite being Swedish Trip Hop) and later Whale is more Trip Pop than Hop. Oh, and Intastella were really good.

I adore Trip Hop. People don't like it more because they don't know it. Every person who heard any of the artists I played at my home at the time left desperate to have copies of what I listened to or pieces of paper with names of tracks and bands. It made me feel kind of cool, a trendsetter really.

You, I and disthing need to set up some kind of online virtual radio station and take it in turns DJing from our own collections. Apart from one person I shouldn't have let slip away, I've never met people who shared my love of Trip Hop. I always wanted to have someone to talk to about it.

I love introducing it to people too. I know it's a slight cliche but watching people react the first time they hear Portishead's Glory Box is really something. If I got told I could only ever listen to ten songs for the rest of my life, that would be one of the first on the list.

Glory Box makes me cum (metaphorically). My favourite Portishead song. I love singing it, but a man singing "Give me a reason to be... a woman" sounds a little odd :)

From what I've heard, the genre sounds good. It reminds me of some of the electronica genres:)

I'm not sure I could determine which are obscure and aren't, they all seem relatively unknown, except the big 3 (Portishead, Tricky and Massive Attack).

I guess I'll just give you a list of ones I can think of and see right now on my computer:

DJ Krush
UNKLE
Archive
Halou
DJ Shadow
Forss
Bonobo
All India Radio
Soap Kills
Sneaker Pimps
AIM
Moth Equals
Akira Yamaoka
Belleruche
Blockhead
Bluba Lu
Cibo Matto
Cold Cut
DJ Cam
Emika
Emiliana Torrini
Grapes
Quantic
Stateless
Télépopmusik
Theodor Bastard
Thievery Corporation

Of course some of them aren't exclusively Trip Hop, and some of them might not be considered Trip Hop at all by some (I find the line blurry; downtempo, nu jazz, alternative hip hop?) but I hope there's some you haven't heard of :) Feel free to reciprocate, I'm always on the look out for good new Trip Hop. I'll check out Whale and Intastella now.

Oh also, although they're maybe a little more industrial, Trent Reznor (NIN) started a project with his lovely lover-wife called 'How To Destroy Angels'. The songs 'A Drowning' and 'The Spaces in Between' definitely have that mood and atmosphere Trip Hop is famous for.

Kidney Thieves are pretty industrial too, but have a couple of songs with a Trip Hop nod.

Have you listened to Massive Attack?

I have indeed. They were kind of my introduction, quickly followed by Portishead and Tricky. Then Whale, Lamb, Martina Topley Bird, Mr. Scruff, Trout, Monk&Canatella, and lots of bands that were only semi-Trip Hop. Then the bands which came after Trip Hop. I still love Sneaker Pimps and Morcheeba. I always think Groove Armada are a bit Trippy Hop too.

Right now I'm off to listen to "Anything" by Martina Topley Bird because it's absolutely beautiful and I haven't heard it for ages. :)
