My friend, an American, is 18 and said she got grounded. I'm Canadian and I find this odd. Is it normal in America?

If you live with your parents, you live by their rules. If you don't like it than move out.

I don't think it's normal. Americans are weird sometimes.

Im an 18-year old american, and I CAN see how this happens, and in many cases, normal. It seems to be getting harder and harder to be independent these days... For many that i've seen at least. I think the schooling system has a lot to do with it, as it was once used to teach you how to LIVE, and is now teaching useless, and mostly forgotten facts. Welcome to America.

It's a weird situation, when you're legally an adult but still living with your parents. Legally no, they can't ground you or confine you to anywhere, at the same time when you're living in their house the situation becomes more slippery, because they do have the power to throw you out on your ass.

Parents feel they have the right to ground you as long as you live in their house, regardless of age.

I agree with nightmare28. As long as she is living off of her parents, under their roof, she does what she is told. If she moves out and gets her own place, then she can be her own boss.

Some parents and grandparents take it too far . I've know ppl who made their adult kids pay and do what a renter would but still treat them like a kid - had to be home by a certain time , tell who they could go out with ect . I feel that's wrong you can't have it both ways . If I pay the bills ( like I do with my 18 yr old grandson who lives with me part time ) then I make the rules ( though if he feels they are unfair we talk about it and some times I agree with him and change them) The main thing is to respect each other .
