Yeah, I don't live there so I've only done it in 5 states. (I've visited 5 US states total)

It does sound like an awesome challenge and I'd probably do it too if I did live there. I wouldn't go out of my way to do it, but there's no harm in just keeping record.

I have thought about this before, but to also go one step further and keep a list of cities (sort of like how people geo-tag photos) then plot them on a map.
