They'd be better off keeping them in direct sunlight. They'd have more charge. That's why, when the batteries are nearly dead in our remotes, we rub them with our hands to warm them and to get a bit more charge out of them.
We use to put near dead batteries on the radiator to give them a little more charge. I don't think putting them in the fridge is going to do anything beneficial.
Technically lower temperatures do prolong shelf life but it is only in the region of 3% over 5 years for a differance of 25 degrees C. (for alkaline) <BR><BR>It's not worth taking up space in the fridge that could otherwise be filled with beer IMHO.
Just store them at room temperature. I don't keep enough stock in my house to benefit from prolonged shelf-life. As for operation: they actually function a bit better when they're warmer.
keeping batteries in the fridge extends their shelf-life, but it is kinds pointless because a betteries self-life is about 5-10 years or something anyway
