Is it normal to love art but depressed when you draw?

Keep practicing. You will get better, I assure you. Also, look at your art from a positive point of view. It is YOURS no one else will be able to duplicate it on their own, and people are always ass holes on the internet because they can be 'anonymous'. I'd be really interested to see your art work.

Compared to how I was a year or two ago, I'm absolute TONNES better at art, but I feel terrible when I see others' work because they are so much more talented than I am and they practice much more. It makes me feel like I should practice all the time, until I'm AT LEAST at their level - but then I don't feel good enough when I try to practice, and so on and so forth. It gets me down alllll the time.

A great majority of artist suffer through depression, especially about their art. I got accepted into a great art school but I don't compare to half of the students at this school, so I got very discouraged. I wanted to give up but if you let other people's art get to you then you'll never really express yourself. You should keep accounts like Devient art so you can learn from it and try to imporve your self from it. When you see someone great, don't be sad and say your not as good as them, say your going to be better then them.

keep it up... you just need to improve your imagination more.. being a good/keen observer also helps your ability to visualize.

Here's some tips. Always sketch first before you hardline when you sketch, sketch lightly and when you start to see it come together sketch a little darker, then hardline it(go over it with a pen or marker, I use the thin sharpies). I used to just draw it ( hardline\outline) , but now since I sketch it always turns out way better, patience is hard, but worth it. This isn't for everyone. I know there's people out there that can just draw, and their proportions, angles background all is perfect. Good luck. Oh and always study pictures of art that you like and figure out what you like. You'll only improve! Practice

I did the same. DeviantArt really made me feel like crap. Don't worry though, I believe that art is more than simple aesthetic beauty. It's expression and emotion in whichever way suits the artist best. If people hate on you for drawing the same stuff over and over, don't mind it. I mean, just look at Picasso's blue period.
