Is it normal to need to hold something while walking?

When ever I walk in a public place, I need to hold something in my hand to feel comfortable while I am walking. I usually hold my phone, however I am not a guy who is constantly glued to my phone. I don't use it while I am walking I just hold it in my hand. If I don't hold it in my hand I feel like I'm walking funny. IIN?

I can't go out for a walk without a bag. Even if I'm just walking for the sake of walking, I'll take my handbag. I think I just don't know what to do with my arms if I don't.

Maybe you just like having something to hold onto. Sounds harmless.

I guess I know what you mean. If I have something bulky in my left hand (my notepad or tablet) when I walk, I feel more balanced. Maybe it's like that thing where tightrope walkers carry a stick for balance.

voted yes right away, I'm the same. for me I feel like my arm swaying movement is just wrong and awkward when walking empty handed. that's why I always hold something like rolled paper or phone/bottle etc or put my hands in pockets. otherwise it feels so weird like my arms have no natural movement when not holding somethinf

I can walk without something in my hand, but I have noticed that I do this. Usually it's a bus pass. It's just a little piece of paper but I don't usually chuck it away until a couple of hours later. During that time I kind of just fiddle on with it, fold it, rip it a bit, scrumple it up in a ball and fidget with it. And if I'm walking then I'll just hold onto it. It's not noticeable in my situation but I don't think it's normal:P.

Perhaps it's your subconscious? In public, when most of the citizens are carrying on with the day, most of them have something in their hand/hands. Cellphones, MP3 player, Coffee or some type of beverage, car keys, etc. Maybe somewhere in your subconscious, you feel like you are supposed to behave as the others in order to feel more comfortable around society. So you don't feel like you stick-out from the crowd?

Or maybe that^ makes no sense?

Anyway, you should try to analyze your behavior when you don't fully understand why it is you do something. I know you stated that you feel like you are walking funny if you aren't holding something, but why? If I were you I would try to answer that question. Questioning your behavior is the only way to understand who you are. What you are doing isn't harmful in any way, at least I don't see how it could be. However, I would want to know why. That's just my opinion, though.

It's definitely not a mental thing, its physical. I don't want to conform to the average man, so no, that is not the reason. I am actually very self-aware and I try to analyse it. But I think it's just a physical habit to make myself feel more comfortable whilst I am walking. I just wanted to know if anyone else has a similar habit.

I can see that you're an individual who likes to help others and I appreciate that. I've noticed on a lot of you're comments. Respect.

Okay, so that rules out that theory. Well, it's sort of similar. Sometimes when I go out, I have a tendency to be slightly "theatrical", and I like holding items because I like acting like other people from time to time. It's one of those weird personality traits I have. It's all for fun, though. :P

In my part of the world, I see people holding on to the afore mentioned items. It's quite common around here. :)
