Sometimes when my boyfriend is sleeping, he will violently shake - it looks just like he's having a fit, although I don't think he is because if I shout his name enough he just wakes up, acknowledges me and then falls back asleep again. It's a bit scary, and he has no memory of it happening in the morning. Is this normal?

I can't say I'm best qualified to answer, but I know that dogs and pigs shake violently in their sleep.
And old best friend from when I was a teenager used to come to mine for sleepovers, and I woke up to find her literally hmping thin air on the Lilo® bed. She had no idea she was doing it - but we did have a good laugh!
I'm not sure if this is anything to worry about, judging by what you say regarding his responding to stimuli (i.e. your calling his name) and the fact that he claims not to have any recollection of his shaking - especially if he is physically sound upon waking up from a deep sleep.
Perhaps you could see if he'd see a doctor or other medical professional, if you're worried.
Good luck!

I just mean when I get woken up, i am NOT a happy camper, and in my sleepy grumpy mood there is no room for cuddles - just sleep!!
Good Luck!
