My dad does this. I can tell when he's thinking in his native tongue because it takes him longer to reply (thinking of the right word in English). He's so cute when he get's angry and switches languages mid sentence ^_^

I do that sometimes. I'm the opposite of you. I think in German or Cantonese instead of English (my native language).
It's normal.

I've got friends born in India, Pakistan, China, Ghana, and Germany who all left their countries when they were about seven. Except for the Ghanaian (who learned English and Twi from the start), they all hit a point where they were confused about which language they should be thinking in. They say they mostly think in English now and only think in their native language where there isn't a good word in English or where they have a strong association with a particular word.

Lol, I do the same thing. I'm American and learning Spanish, and I sometimes write my journal entries in Spanish. Or I'll find myself cursing ("mierda!") And my Indonesian friend often writes her Twitter/Facebook statuses in English.

I've read that one way to tell if you are truly fluent in a language is if you can think in it with out trying to .

Yeah I do that tooo

Yes I think in English even though I speak Japanese. I think that's because I'm in the USA. But I can switch anytime.

I do this too. I sometimes think in French which is a bit odd since I don't know how to speak it. In dreaming, many different languages are used. Besides English (my native language), French and German are the most common. I speak these languages fluently in the dream but it depends on exactly how "deep" I am in the dream. Sometimes when me or another person speaks there are subtitles as if we are in a foreign film. It's very interesting how the mind works.
