I am terrified of large underwater things (whales, sunken ships, submarines, and the open ocean itself.) And whales are probably my biggest fear.
I know it's irrational because I'm not especially scared of sharks and things I know are dangerous in the water, it's of things that are quite larger than I am.
I do however "face my fear" and swim in the ocean and my swimming pool. But I am always afraid that the light in my pool is always a whale eye (which of course is silly, which is why I can continue to swim)
But it's to the point to where I've been reduced to tears just to see a video of someone swimming with a whale in the ocean.
I can't even play video games levels such as the sunken ship level in Mario 64.

I can't even find a "phobia" word for it.
Anyone else with the same problem?
Do you think it's normal?

Wow. This is interesting. Have you had a traumatic experience involving whales? I mean maybe something you saw about whales and the ocean on tv when you were young? How old are you now?
@: WarLord
its times like this i wish i were a professional psychiatrist and not just an amateur one.
Hmm, never heard of that phobia before.... Largeunderwaterthingsaphobia??? well, if this is real then go to a therapist and talk about it, if it's not then go round calling yourself a largeunderwaterthingsaphobe anyway.
Just imagine you're swimming and a giant squid wraps a tentacle around your leg and pulls you down deeper and deeper and just before you drown your lungs collapse from the pressure. This should help ease your worries.
@: WarLord
hahaha, this kid's never even going to take a bath after that.
yeah, that's not an abnormal fear, bud
@: WarLord
lol
You have posted this before its just been customised a little more then the last time. Its normal to be afraid of a suken ship like your afraid of a haunted house but whales? Come on.
Don't worry. After an 8-hr day at a Six Flags waterpark in Houston, I have a phobia of whales too.
Don't worry, my mom is the same way. I mean the Ocean is huge; It's going to be scary.
HAHAH u are so funni
.... 0_0 wow
thats hard to talk but i guess everyone has a weird fear.... hidden away somewere... i've seen about stuff like this can't remember the name. rember reading about a guy afraid of rootbeer!
did you guys hear about Shamoos steak dinner? He ordered it WHALE-done!
Aww thats Horrible.. I've got a Zillion and one Phobia's Myself
So Your Phobia Is Compleatly Normal But It's Just uncommon
i Have the Same Problem Where i'm Afraid of doing Dishes
(I Know It's Compleatly Retarded) It makes Me Feel Sick to my tummy and The way It Smells the way it feels the way it looks it's just so Disgusting that I throw up everytime i do the dishes and well the reason i'm afraid of it is because i take a daily antibiotic to boost my white blood cell count and my immune system and if i throw that up that makes me think i'm going to catch a disease or something thats just Hypodranic er however it's spelled
Completly normal. Don't worry, maybe someone out there feel the same.
HeeeY!!! I feel like the same!!im also scared of whales!!and I also had a lot of nightmares because of that..I m also scared of big things....also espially of whales...and underwateranimals...Do you mean SuperMario Nintendo 64?!!Yeah!!its kinda scary . ^^
But i dont know why Im scared of whales...ive never see one and Ive actuelly never been on the beach!
Thalassophobia is the fear of open ocean.
Megolophobia is the fear of large objects.
Ichthyophobia is the fear of fish.

Accordingly my diagnosis is you have
Thalasso-Ichtyo-Megalo-phobia

Kinda wordy but i spose if you need a name for it.
The whale eye thing is scary I DONT BLAME YOU FOR THAT!!! And the open ocean is another thing that is agreeable...
my step dad threw me in the pool wen i was like 7-8 and said swim, i almost drowned, not knowing where the bottom was / not knowing what was under me, ever since then i have had a fear of the ocean, perhaps you had the same experience (sorta) but yours was somthing big coming to get u..
Wow!

Growing up I had the same fear...well almost. I grew up on a lake and I rememeber I would always be treadfully terrified of the over sized carp which occationally swam up to the shore. I used to have the worst nightmares about swiming in the lake and then being attacked by an angler fish, which are terrifying looking things. I also have a fear of sunken ships and anything which is capsized under water. It's not nearly as intense as it was when I was younger, but I still have dreams about wierd fish.

I'm sure you will grow out of it if your still young. We all have our wierd fears.
I have the same thing!
im not as bad as you to be honest, but i get really creeped out by massive things underwater for some reason. even if they arent aive, like ships. This is weird, but i saw a picture of a massive blimp, and it wasnt even underwater, but because it was massive it scared me, i dont know why. Its not like im scared of buildings, just blimps that are on the ground and you can see how big they are.
wow thats weird
just try to avoid situations invovling whales, or submarines, and with the help of couciling you should be free of this curse in a few years time, then you can be free to explore as many sunken ships as you like.
YESSS SOMEBODY KNOESS MY PAYNEE!!!11

ok, enough of that

But, i too cannot stand to play the sunken ship level in Mario 64.... wow hi-five for that one.

could it be that you don't like huge-ass creatures around you, like sharks aren't all huge but whales... whales are, well, whales.... they are huge! it is rather scary that something is living and that huge....
OH MY GOD. I genuinely can't believe I've found someone with the same phobia as me.... The funny thing is, the EXACT same level on mario 64 used to scare me. When I'm in a swimming pool lined with tiles and the water's moving I imagine it's something under the water and often have to get out of the water. It's not always with water, there was a level on halo 3 where a massive ship flys over and covers all visible sky, and I didn't exactly get scared, I just sort of got this really odd adrenaline rush.
I have the same thing. I used to have nightmares about swimming next to whales. I dunno where it comes from...but you're not alone :)
you think thats odd? its natural to be scared of thing physically superior to us and thing we dont fully understand, and whales happen to be on he top ten of those lists. There real enigmas.
Ironically, the fear of long words is
Hippopotomonstrosesquipedaliophobia. try saying that three times fast.
I'm not afraid of water, I can swim, and I like coral reefs and clear tropical seas and whatnot. But yes, the wide, dark, deep ocean really scares me. I loved Finding Nemo but some parts of it frightened me.
This has to be common. It just has to be. Lmfao I have absolutly nothing helpful to tell you other than to go get a therapist, don't swim in the ocean, and stay off the acid before you go swimming! Good Luck!

~Peace~
Someone who fianlly understands! I am terrified of sunken ships, submarines, cars and pretty much anything else man-made thats sunken underwater and have been since I can remember. To my knowledge I have never had an expirence with any of these things that should make me fear them. I just do. Seeing a picture or watching Titanic puts me on edge, but it doesn't make me run for the hills or anything. But being near a place where I know a sunken ship is or in the ocean where I can't see or touch the bottom freaks me out big time. I guess it has something to do with things that I can identify that don't look the way they should. Whales, I don't know anything about that, but they are really big and it's understandable if you're afraid of them. That pool light thing is really creepy, by the way. I'm sure this is more common than most people think, but talking to a therapist will probably help work it out and maybe even overcome it.
wtf? Lol afraid of rootbeer? LOL :D
Well...it seems you need a clinical psychologist.Dont worry.Plenty of people have irrational fears.
This is me!!! It's not something I ever really talk about, but even if I'm watching something sinking on tv in the water, or watching scuba divers check out a shipwreck or some sort of wreckage, it freaks me out! I look away. I don't know why. What really got me, was when a guy I was dating and I were watching a movie, and we both were like, "oh boy" on the sinking boat part - and he proceeded to tell me he had the SAME fears. I couldn't believe it. I believe in past lives and I think it wouldn't be totally weird if that might be how I died or something. I have no other reason for these fears.
I don't have it as severe, but I do have a minor phobia of large things under the water. I once swam in a rather clear lake when I was younger and still had to have a swimming vest on. I looked below me and there were very very large trees under the water, that had fallen quite a while before. I began to cry and thrash and scream for my father, who came rushing to me just to find I was terrified of the trees. I can't swim in sea weed water, either, if it touches me for if i feel it may be close I scream and kick.
