My boyfriend is freaked out by condiments. He cant even stand to look at ketchup. The thought of Mayo makes him sick. BBQ sauce or salad dressing, maple syrup, A1, mustard, hot sauce, sour cream, dip, jam or jelly all makes him want to vomit, even if he's near it. He hates to even sit near me when I eat my food with this stuff although he has gotten used to it. He used to even make me rinse with mouth wash before he would kiss me after I ate some. He will eat, salt, butter, pepper, garlic powder and sometimes use olive oil. The weird thing is that he says he has never in his life tried any of this stuff. He's almost 28.

What gives. Is this normal? I think not.

I also hate condiments, and I have my whole life. I have been trying to be better at accepting other people's condiment usage, especially my husband's. I am so grossed out by them, I don't even like touching the bottle even with the lid on... I can't kiss him for hours afterwards even if he brushes... and when I swallow his cum I think it tastes like condiments so I try not to taste it. My husband happens to be obsessed with condiments too, so it's not just one serving he has with his food, it's half a cup of ranch with his carrots/pizza/salad etc and ketchup and whatever else. Puke.

I also in recovery from an eating disorder, and they always kept trying to tell me in rehab that this was part of it, and I told them it has nothing to do with it, that stuff is disgusting to! smell, texture, everything.

food tastes flavorful enough in my opinion.

I've always hated condoments, too. But i love sweet and sour sauce. I hate to see mayo, ketchup, and mustard because thats just creepy and gross.

I hate condiments as well. Not only do I feel food tastes good enough by itself (why smother everything and make it all taste the same!) but I do think it's a texture thing. I get grossed out doing dishes that have ketchup or mustard on them. I get insulted when I cook and someone uses crazy condiments. Believe me, his "phobia" is WAY more uncomfortable for him than for you. Us condi-phobes have a very hard time eating at say a pot-luck or picnic. Or god forbid we order in a restaurant without such and such and they screw it up, then we send it back with fears it may be spit on. If i was starving and someone handed me a sandwich with mayo I'd go hungry. Let him have his phobias, it apparently is not so unusual. Or send him to my house for dinner, and I'll send you my ketchup, BBQ, gravy, mustard weilding husband. YUK!

This is completely normal!! I have a seriously over the top phobia (because thats what it is, a phobia!!) I can't stand to touch, look or be near a condiment, they all make me feel physically sick!! I thought i was the only one and people thought i was strange! If i am 'threatened with any type of condiment i physically shake and it does frighten me! So i empathise with your boyfriend!

That's hilarious.. One day when youre in bed with him, you should ask if you two can try something different such as tying each other up. Then when you tie him up, bring a bunch of condiments and squirt them on him!!

Reading this site has been relieving to me.

I, too, can't stand the majority of condiments. I refuse to eat:

Ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, tomato sauce, sour cream, salad dressings.

Also I won't eat any seafood, milk, or broccoli.

Yes, it makes life difficult at times. People don't understand why you can't eat something that has ketchup or mustard on it, but I would immediately throw up if I tried to eat any of it.

Heh I want to bring him to Mcdonalds or a grocery store, seems like fun.

Cover the bed in different packets of mustard ketchup etc then push him in it and make sure he splatters them. Then lick it all off and eat his juicey tender brain. I suggest mayo!

Awesome!

no way thats not normal. i mean, i could maybe understand if he had TRIED this stuff, but to get freaked out if he hasnt even TRIED them? besides, mayo is my life!

NOT normal. That's just weird... It's one thing to dislike condiments, but to be unable to look at them? Uh-uh.

I used to have a boyfriend who was the exact same way. He would not add anything to his food besides salt. Also, he never ate fruits or veggies and hardly ever drank water. It wasn't a very healthy diet, but he apparently had no health problems.
Most of the males I know are very picky eaters....which is strange to me because I thought boys devoured everything in sight. Another example is my best male friend. He does not like anything creamy(ie: sour cream, butter, yogurt, salad dressing, etc). He complains about the texture and how the cold temperature of these ingredients aren't pleasant to him.
Maybe your boyfriend is the same way and doesn't like the thought of the texture and the consistency of condiments. This could be a sensory thing, but there's nothing wrong with that. It IS kind of strange how he gets so worked about being around condiments though. It's good that you are helping him get over his fear, haha. Maybe one day he'll try some!

Sounds like a phobia...

He kind of sounds like me. I absolutely cannot stand peanut butter and refuse to be around it. I have in the past eaten things with peanut butter in them and I didn't mind it until I found it it had peanut butter and then from that moment further I couldn't stand it.

I don't know when it started but my parents swear that I used to like it in my toddler stages. Like I said, I don't remember it so I don't believe them as I find it is the most nasty stuff created.

My hatred toward peanut butter is so bad I won't kiss my girlfriend when she has eaten some and refuse to try anything even around peanut butter out of a rediculous fear of cross contamination.

Some of that stuff is kind of grungy, I would say your boyfriend has less of a fear and more of a just general disgust for the stuff mentioned above I'm about the same way with cheese the stuff disgusts me. But it is a little odd that he has never tried any of the stuff before maybe sneak some of it onto his food some time.

I can't stand eating with someone who uses salad dressing or anything similar. I won't freak out or make a scene, but I might show signs of being disturbed by it.
Comment Hidden (show)
i never tried bacon, i HATE it..
i never tried mayonnaise, i HATE it
and i probably would feel disgusted with discovering its taste after kissing someone.. so i think it´s all right)

how can you not like bacon
Comment Hidden (show)
i like condiments i think its very strange, but then again i like to eat my own shit so who am I?
Comment Hidden (show)
You should have him blindfolded and take him to the condiment section of a supermarket and video the findings...

We will be awaiting the results!

I think its wierd that he gets freaked out by looking at them, but I have the same aversions, I am great with gravy (not the southern kind, which makes my stomach turn, but regular gravy that goes with a roast dinner). Its a texture thing, and yes if I touch them its gross and weird and I feel like freaking out. I also know this is not rational so try to act as rational as I can, but I do eat jam, just not mayo, mustard, ketchup, peanut butter etc, complete strangers would try to force me thinking I was being a fussy child but its phobia, and so if a waitress has a problem with me ordering food without, then I say its an allergy, because she has no right to force food preferences on me. Other than that, I am working on the phobia, I tried Pizza for the first time when I was 16, (had been avoiding the red pizza sauce) but found out it wasnt bad, and the same with some salad dressing. Its a work in progress but its hard, if you order a sandwich without and it comes with, I would have to be having stabbing hunger pains to eat it even with it scraped off.

Definitely weird. Not liking them is one thing... not being able to look at them makes it seem like he was tortured by his older brother with katsup and mustard packets when he was little.. lol

I can't stand screaming because of when I was a kid... so maybe.

not normal srry

I have a very strong aversion to ketchup, can't stand the stuff and would prefer not to see the bottle or be around it, however, once in a blue moon I'll actually eat some on fries perhaps, as if the ketchup fear passes briefly, but it's always there the next time. I can't get across how much the stuff just pisses me off. It's like it's pretending to be something it's not and it's taking the piss out of me.
Having said that, I love HP sauce which has exactly the same consistency...
Comment Hidden (show)
Lol he has a problem. poor guy.
Comment Hidden (show)
OMG.My best friends little brother was like that when he was little. He would freak out if he saw ketchup or mustard or tomato sauce. He got over it (kind of) when he got older
Comment Hidden (show)
very, very strange. He has gone his whole life and never tasted ketchup or mayo? I find that next to impossible to believe
Comment Hidden (show)
It is VERY NORMAL! I am the same way! Ketchup the smell makes me gag! I am an educated sane girl...and have been this way since I was little. There are other factors to worry about when it comes to dating. ie: do they cheat and lack integrity, do they strive for better? Important things, not if he eats his food plain like I do.
Comment Hidden (show)
I don't like mints shaped like condoms either.
Comment Hidden (show)
Lol! My mother is almost the same way over ketchup.
Comment Hidden (show)
This make absolute no sense to me. I can understand not liking any of that staff, but reacting like this is way overreacting.
Comment Hidden (show)
Eh, that's how feel. I can't stand condiments, and while I'm ok with being near them, I won't kiss my girlfriend for about an hour after she's had them xD
Of all of the condiments I've tried (not including salt, pepper, garlic powder or salsa), They've all made me at least somewhat sick with ketchup being the worst. I had two french fries barely dipped in ketchup and I felt like I puked my guts up. Not fun. So now I just avoid anything like that >.<

Ummmmm.... well, that is very strange. maybe it really is the texture idea, or it's some kind of wierd phobia
