My friend ive known since elementary school recently told me about how he eats himself.
When he's board chews up the inside of his mouth and works large chunks out till they bleed. He buys large chunks of gum to keep him from doing this but still does at least once a day. im worried, what should i do?
Do you think it's normal?

tell his mom to take him to a doctor
In this situation, when he feels like doing it, bring him vegetables or something for him to chew.... this doesnot happen that often except for children.
take him to a doctor thats not normal at all
actually if you need to know the tissue in your mouth grows back incredibly fast so you dont need to worry about that as for the normal part of umm i dont think so but what do i know ;)
It's just a phrase. I did it myself as a kid, I'd sit in the classroom bored out of my mind and not notice i'd be doing it, until I did it one day too hard and it bled. Anyway I used to still do it ages ago but stop doing it. Recently I started again but with my actually lip, but it's different, I'm innocently biting my lip, no blood, no chuncks just like a sexy bite lol. Your friends will stop when he's ready to. But with saying that how long has this been going on for. If you are worried still do confront him and tell him your worries, do it as politely as you can and if this continues theres pretty much nothing left you can do, if he won't listen to anyone else why would he listen to you. Hope this helps.
could be a psychological disorder, something like those people who eat their own hair, I would recommend a therapist. I should also worry about the repetative damage, could cause a permanent hole, infection, or worse. If a psych dr. says no biggie, I would try hypnotherapy to stop it.
I would give more credence to hypnotherapy than the average General Practitioner or Psych who'll just prescribe drugs with side effects one may not enjoy, but another drug or three might bring you some semblance of comfort, but not cure the ailment.Once cured,no need to purchase more drugs, hence not viable in Big Pharma's eyes(drug compaies fund med schools, why do you think a Dr.will tell you there is no cure or natural remedy/cure for your ailment?--natural cures/rmedies are not patentable.Hypno therapists might be Dr. too,but MAY be less apt to prescribe dangerous drugs!
He should have a dental extraction for all of his tooth
I think there are some conditions that might make the flesh in there rough and possibly somewhat damaged. He may have a condition like that bothering him and not realize it. I'm not sure what's it's called, but I've read about it before.

Of course, it's more likely to just be a bad habit.
i think some how he has a habit. really its like biting your nails or twisting your hair around your finger except its a bit more perculiar and twisted
i do this all the time, i remove the skin inside my inner lips, bottom, top and even cheeks with my hand. i do it agressively and for hours. i've been doing it since i was in grade school. i cannot help it.i read about a condition caled dermatilomania- which means skin picking. this habit might be related to this.
anyways i found out about a book called "skin picking disorders" by David Florendale. i am expecting recieve it soon from a family member. it might help your friend as well. its worth a shot.
Um... That's self cannibalism and definitely not normal.
wow.. wat a cannibal...

you better watch out! jk..

my friend told me she did this to when she was mad or bored..

its not normal...
Yes, exactly, self-cannibalism!!(the act of eating oneself) Definitely not noramal!! You should make him see a doctor asap!
It is an OCD habit, just like biting your nails and cuticles into bleeding, or picking your skin constantly, or pulling out your eyelashes or hair. Your friend needs to talk to his doctor about this OCD type of anxiety disorder. There are meds out there that can help with this. It is not to be ignored, as constant biting and causing sores in the mouth could exacerbate mouth cancer.
