My sister finds the squeeking sond made by polystrine foam packaging phisicaly painful. She can not touch it, be in the same room as a mail order box beeing unpacked and finds the site of it toralt disgisting. it is an anthema to her. She has always had strange responses to some daterials, may things, such as velvet or fine wool, she cannot touch on the grounds they are "too soft" and therfore feel horrid. No other menbers of the family share this condition and i am at a loss as to what may be a phcological cuse for it.
Do you think it's normal?

Some people just don't like the feel of certain materials. I for once can't stand my finger nails touching back pack material the scratch makes me shiver. It's more common than you think.

i dont understand why you replied with a comment that i have beeb removed fo repat offending when this is my first and only post and violates none of the rules laid down, could you pleas tell me whats happening?
@: lupus
or do you meen that somone you replid to my post has been removed and so his reply to my post has been removed too? if so this is a very sensable system for dealing with nusence cases.
i have an exesive grooming habit, i dont particulary worry about germs, clenliness or my apperence, but i can not pass a tap witout letiing a little water run over my hands. i have herd that exesive handwashing is typical of obsesive compulsive behavior, and exsesive grooming has even been found in mice with a gene beleved to be liked to OCD. Does this meen that my whole family is Obsesive Compulsive? Can the condidtion run in families? My parents seem normal enough...
Lupus, please check your spelling.

sorry, i am dyslexic and this, like all forums, has no speel check. I would type it into word, then check spelling and then post it here, but that would take to long. Besides, many counties have diferent spellings of diferent words, i myself have been crisisizesd by americans for using "wrong" spelling when i know i have checked it and my spelling is corect. i find no-one understands the dificulty of dyslexia and i find people who critisize my disability without knowing me anoying bigots. it just spelling for gods sakes. is this normal?
I believe that I already responded to this in your post which was pointless. How am I a bigot for wanting to read something that actually has some sort of form to it?
One of my best friends can't touch sponges, and I know another girl who is freaked out by wet paper. People have thier quirks.
That has nothing to do with obsessive compulsive disorder. It is more reminiscent of the hypersensitivity found in people with autistic spectrum disorders. This is not a "psychological" problem as such, but a processing one. If you are worried then you could look up Carl Delacato's work with hyper/hypo sensitivity in people with autism. It may prove helpful.
The best one I saw off lately was a woman who had this VERY serious and tremendous fear towards pickles! Yep, those cucumbers in a jar. Totally and utterly freaked her.

Am not sure if it was only the Kosher ones so.
What a crock of sh*t omerta (1644) , I can not bare the texture or sound of wet wool, The squeecking sound it make sends shudders through me as i relate it to the feel. I also can I bare to walk bare foot on some synthetic carpets.

I am NOT Autistic and never do I have a compulsive disordered whatisnormal (1394) ! It happens to be “tactile defensiveness”

The root cause is neurological dysorganization in the midbrain region of the brain which is largely responsible for filtering incoming stimuli, and, may not adequately screen out all extraneous tactile stimulation causing the person to perceive the input as extreme and uncomfortable.
well unless im abnormal too your sis is normal in my book. everything youve described makes me cringe just thinking of it and styrophome makes me throw up...it is just one of those things your dont think about... and to be honest i dont think your should really care to much...
Peep_ (2600), I didn't say that everyone displaying these symptoms are autistic, but it is a fact that this is the sort of thing often found in Autistic spectrum disorders. The key word there is %u201Cspectrum%u201D. Everyone is on the same processing spectrum, autistic or not, and we can learn a lot about ourselves by looking at the way other people process incoming stimuli.

You said:

Firstly, learn to spell. Secondly, you are saying that the problem is one of processing, or as you put it, %u201Cfiltering%u201D. That is not very far from what I myself was saying. I suggest that in the future, instead of jumping in and insulting someone, you might actually research what it was that they were saying.
sounds like you have spelling problems
:S for some reason, every time you put in a quote mark it leaves a string of letters and numbers. Oh well.
