So ok. I am getting more and more annoyed every time I watch American TV programs. Why the heck is it that they have this impression that English are either all posh or have really bad London accents? It just really annoys me. I have a picture in my head of two Americans talking about us all having "afternoon tea and scones". It's not that I hate Americans or anything. In fact, my dream is to work there and many amazing people have surfaced from the US. But everytime I watch something it's either: "Good arfternoon dahrling" or "Take ya bags luv". Is it normal to get annoyed at this misconception?
Do you think it's normal?

its cause the americans are stereotyping hippocrits!!(as in they complain when they are stereotyped!)
Well, all I can say of American TV is I have all these cable channels and yet I can't find anything I like most of the time. I find myself clicking my remote control constantly. Crap channel after crap channel and they're inundated with commercials.
What do you mean when all of our programs have people that talk like british. I'm guessing your not american so you have no clue what you are talking about!
I'm not getting at Americans... they're really decent, and I'm not saying EVERY Tv show has people that talk like British... but how they talk IS NOT BRITISH. And I DO have a clue, I've been discussing it with my American friend who lives over here and she says it's kind of stupid too.
what programs are you talking about?
I don't know, maybe I'm just being uptight... they are programs for teens after all and just joking around.
My sister enjoys watching these:
Example 1) Bratz - When they go to London, she bumps into a Duke and plays croquet and they all are over-the-top. Byron Powell has a really cringeworthy posh accent. Everyone else has a really bad London accent
Example 2) Even Stevens- Lady whatveverhernameis (something weird) arrives at the school. Is shown around by Ren. Speaks like she's been beamed out of the 1800s. Her father acts liek it's a crime to stuff your face full of junk food. Their accents are AWFUL.
Thinking it through, I'm sure this is just for the kid's benefit but even so, it's still annoying. I want to hit the TV with a BIG mallet every time I hear a faked british accent.
I dont know whether people have noticed but in Neighbours an australian program they are using english slang like tosser and slapper so maybe all countries immitate other countries
YES!!! It IS normal lol! I thought the same, they always have to have the worst english accents, espesh when they try a London one, they used to be funny, but now its a pain. Not everyone talks like that!!!
The British humor us tremendously!

Jolly good ole' chap!

HA! That kills me.
For those who cannot stand the London accent stereotypes, here goes with some lingo from my neck of the woods in the good old North Midlands of England.

"Good mornin' duck' ow' a tha'"

"Gret te' see wethas pissin' it darn agen'"

"I wudnt gow darn' Lundun smog for nowert' low life cokney fukers all travel arand' on't fukin' toob undergraand' like fukin rats".
It's because they follow posh spice around too much.
You all have bad teeth because Hilter stole your milk is something we in America are taught. Is that true? I mean the milk thing,we know its true you all have bad teeth.
I think everyone is misunderstanding me a bit. I do not think every single american thinks the same way as people on those particualr television shows. If I did, I would be pretty small minded. Argh, I've just dug myself into a hoel I can't get out of haven't I?
All I'm saying is that those who sterotype us don't always realise that it annoys the people on the other end. I think I'm going to abandon this story as a bad job... now you all think I'm out to get you (which I'm not!!)
Firstly, even stevens is great. I love it.

Secondly, how would they know what our accent sounds like, most americans dont know there is a world outside their country, just deal with it. As for me, I'm off for some tea n crumpets, may even pop a spot of cricket if the queens up for it what what!
Prove my intelligence? Like I would go about doing that on a website which primarily consists of teenagers and middle age losers looking for a chance to voice thier worthless opinion.
And how would me suggesting even stevens is great be trying to prove my intellegance, lets ask what you like stargirl? Some kind of lord of the ring shit, or elve and nerdy shit like that? I dont even see why I reply to this, probably the fact that I know as soon as you read this, you'll be cracking your knuckles thinking you're making use of you're day writing some shit you think will stick and that you're opinion means jack? Well, that just brings me a smile knowing you're getting satisfaction from spending all you're time at this website :) Good day, and in you're mind, question whether you feel its normal to spend the ammount of time you do on this site that you do, you'll love the results!
Cup of Earl-Gray and a game of Croquet anyone?
What the hellllll are you talkin about
BRITISH PEOPLE ARE HOT AND THEIR ACCENT IS TO! ;)
um, all of the british people i have met are posh and snobby, with bad teeth and breath, and they do eat scones and drink earl grey. with a british accent and they tip horribly as well. so i dont know about you... but my expierience says otherwise
All I can say is that American TV is on average (but exceptig a few programs like Robot Chicken), less intellignet than British TV. I don't think Americans are statistically less intelligent than Brits (although i do think ther education system is worse, and generally America-centric), but I think that American TV overwhelmingly is geared to provide for the 150 million or so less intelligent Americans. One obvious example is that many TV programs have extrememly basic irony (and although many say the Daily show is funny and ironic, I would say its childish and its satire is simplistic, and Im left wing). The other example is stereotypes, which are evident on every major American TV program/show. For example, I have not seen a black person on a sitcom in America who is not obviously culturally black or surrounded by other black people (including Fresh prince of Bel aire). Aside from this American representations of all other countries are often extremely poor, because Americans are not educated about other nationalities, and therefore it is necessary to work off basic templates or stereotypes of these people. Still a lot of British Tv relies on stereotyopes, but there not so overdone, and usually applied only to middle easterners. The thing that really gets my p*ssed with british TV is that when they have a translator do an African person, its always in broken English with a thick 9put on) African accent. The African people are not speaking their own language badly, so why the hell do you translate their sentences into simplistic and broekn English?
I think it is pretty normal to FEEL that way...I'm sure You Love You Mother...it's just hard to see it at this point...Teenage life can be really tough, and emotional...hang in there...things get better...and ask for help if you feel you need it !!! :)
Everyone is stereotyped.

Everyone.
