Wats really weird is not having an open mind to music.

People who think that rap is just some trend, are probably rednecks, or just plain ignorant. You need to get with the program, HELLO! Rap has been around since the late 70's and it isn't going anywhere, it is a genre, and there are many intelligent rappers out there. Something you probably didn't know is about 90 percent of rappers listen to rock music and are insprired by it. Just to name a few who are: Eminem, Jay-Z, Nas, Common and Juelz Santana, who even mentioned Kurt Cobain in one of his songs. Go out and buy some 90's rap, and educate yourself, it is a part of AMERICAN HISTORY so get fucking used to it!!! LOL.

How am I stupid? I admit a lot of rap is pointless and just noise, but some of it actually has a meaning. A lot of other genre's are just that as well, noise.

Not all Rap and R&b is garbage, in fact growing up in the "ghetto" as I did, a lot of those songs really helped me get through the day, and some even now. A lot of these songs also made me think really hard about the things I believed in, and even question my beliefs and what I wanted out of life.

Mary J blige-Runaway Love, 2pac-Changes, Trick Daddy-Thug Holiday, City High-What would you do?, Kanye West-Jesus Walks, Nas-I know I can, Eminem-The Way I am, Nas-If I Ruled the World, Lyfe Jennings-S.E.X. (not a dirty song like you would think), Nas-If Heaven was a Mile Away, Coolio-Gangsta's Paradise, India Arie-Because I am a Queen, Young Jeezy-Dreamin' and 2pac-keep your head up

Whilst I have no specific issue with rap as a genre - I can't help but feel that it's going down hill quite fast. As mentioned previously, there are still quality artists around (Lupe Fiasco comes to mind) but they seem to be getting fewer and farther in between.

Rap is now where hair metal was in the late 80's. It's become a parody of itself. While the entire music business struggles with poor sales, rap music seems to have tanked.

I don't really like to paraphrase without providing a link as evidence, but I read somewhere not too long ago that sales of rap music is down by 80% - a whole lot more than other genres. Maybe the overall quality of the product is the reason???

I knew that rap had existed even in the late 70's. I listened to some old stuff a little while ago, and thought it was OK compared to todays rap. Granted, I won't listen to rap any day of the week, but I still think it was better back in the 80's w/ MC Hammer etc.

I don't consider rap, music. I really don't. I listen to all types of rock and I just can't see how rap could be considered music, they play next to no instruments.

As much as I hate rap and disagree on the level of "deepness" to it and everything people have to argue for it, I do have to say that it is unfair to call Rap "noise" or to deny it being "music". Rap IS music. It's not the most intelligent or the best thing out there but it IS music.

I think that open mindedness is very important in that situation. I hope that you mean that rap, for lack of a better word, is crap. It seems to be a completely different situation when you talk about movies. You say "I don't really like scary movies" and no one minds, but if you were to say " scary movies suck!" you might get into an argument. Im going to put this in the simplest terms I can. Take a rock song, alternative, hard rock etc. And take the lyrics and determine if it could possibly be turned in to your english professor as a poem. Now, try and do that with a rap song. See the thing is a lot of modern rap isn't really rap. Rap began to die in the mid to late 90's. I am an avid rap listener but I do not listen to what today's people call rap. Not all rap is bad just modern mainstream rap.
