Is it normal to not call people by their real names? I don't conciously try to, it just seems to have happened. I'll start with my family - I usually call my mum "woman" (in a non derogatory sense, she's cool with it), my dad "fatman" (he is fat) and my bro "guv'nah" or some other made up name, although I do call him by his real name quite often. With friends, if they have an established nickname I'll use that, otherwise it's a surname unless they don't have the sort of surname you could say, in which case it's a first name. If it's someone I don't know too well I'll always go with whatever name they tell me. I don't know why, it makes me uncomfortable to use someone's real name, or I get bored with saying the same old thing over and over again. I've even gone as far as to invent names for a couple of people. Well?
