I am really fascinated with science and technology. I am always amazed at the technological and medical breakthroughs that I read about being made every day. I am especially interested in the technologies of cloning, regeneration, genetic engineering and the advancements being made in creating replacement organs from cultured cells.

When there is no longer any shortage of organs for transplant, and all genetic diseases can be cured how long should we expect to live? And why should we expect there to be a barrier to the problems of longevity being solved?

If the cause of death that took my grandfather is eliminated, if my parents have already long outlived their parents, then how can I expect to die in less than 100 years? And if I can make it to 100, why wouldn't I expect technology to progress to the Star-Trek era, where far more causes of death could be eliminated? Why wouldn't I expect to be able to be rejuvinated?

As the years go by I am finding the dreams of people like Max More and Ray Kurzweil more and more likely. I can't help but expect younger people to find the technology for immortality that much more likely.

Is it becoming common yet for people to expect to live for thousands of years? Doesn't it make war and crime and jail and cops that are allowed to shoot to kill seem that much more stupid and that much more tragic?
Do you think it's normal?

Now that was a lot of bollocks wasn't it.
The first thing I want to ask is how old are you? I mean , what is your life experience? No matter what technology we use, the primary motivating factor in the dissemination, usage,or propagation of it is, GREED. We in the west live in a capitolistic environment or engine that basis itself on greed. The machine we use to disburse technology, relies on greed to further its purpose. Not love of fellowman or higher principles. Only our creator can make things work the way they are supposed to.

First, you misspelled capitalism. While that may not prove that you don't understand it very well, it does argue that you haven't paid attention to details when studying it. Second, capitalism is just the name that the communists gave to the natural order. Those who support this system may prefer to think of it as the free market. Third, when someone invests money in the hope of making more money they may do so for many reasons, simply to make a living or to be able to provide for their own retirement so that they won't have to depend on charity are some good reasons for lending that do not depend on greed. Since you mention religion I think I should also point out that usury is a concept based on a misconception. A lender is not greedy because he expects more back than he lent, rather lending is more valuable than the alternative. And the burrower must offset the use the lender would have made of the money while it was being burrowed as well as offset the risk that they money would not be paid back.

The market economy and the scientific method are together the cheif engines of advancement that have allowed the human race to rise above the standard of living of the primitives.

And I don't think there is any such thing as a God.

The more we grow and evolve as a race, the more motivationg factors for war and violence seem stupid. We are all the same people, no matter what book we read for our values, and eventually we'll figure out that it's better to all work togeter than to blow each other up.

Human advamcement in increasing exponentially. Look at how far we've come in the last 100 years, then look how much of that was done in the last 50, and how much of that was done in the last twenty. A hundred years from now people will look back on us liek we were cavemen.

So troll while you can internet jerks, there is no place for you in the future,
right. cavemen. cos look at all those 1906 people and their steam trains and slightly different fashions. fucking cavemen alright. cant relate to them at all
although i agree with you in the sense that, yes, with the advancing technology, the life expectancy will rise. thousands of years, however, is really pushing it, especially with the increase of overweight and obese people, especially in children. i have a feeling that our life expectancy is going to plummet in the next generation because of the decrese of physical activity and the terrible diets of our species. a deep fried slab of meat is not going to help anyone live past fifty? if you are really bent on living past even seventy, a strict vegan diet is a good idea.
i also read somewhere that if nothing else kills a man, then prostate cancer will. i just dont think that our species is really meant to live past, at the most, one hundred. most old people i know are absolutely miserable, in constant pain. i dont see the joy in living for that long, i believe that you should live your life to the fullest, cliché as it may be.
and since our population, as a planet, is rapidly increasing, it is a natural need for the old and the sick to pass away. there simply is not enough room for absolutely everybody. imagine if every one of the, well i don't know, perhaps nine billion people the world has ever produced were all still alive. there would be about four times the population of today contributing to the pollution that is already a problem. the very problem from which other problems such as global warming sprout. much of the the limited money in our economy would have to be given to the huge population of the elderly to take care of the costly hospital bills created from miraculous organ transplants continuously saving the lives of those that should have been long dead.(especially in a country such as Canada with our free health care.) the economy would also suffer because of the fact that the elderly have less of a
Let's compare 1906 to 2006 shall we?

1906:
-Radio not invented
-TV not invented
-Computers non-existant
-Telephone not yet invented
-Titanic not built yet
-WWI not happened
-Every American owns a car? Yeah right!
-Threat of global warming not existant
-Diseases like Polio and the flu were major and nearly unstoppable

Et cetera.

2006:
-Radio has pretty much come and gone. Most of it has moved to the internet or satellite.
-TV invented, but I believe that it's end will come soon.. The computer is dominating most forms of media.
-Computers invented, and are being mass-produced. Provides a gateway to the entire digital database that can be modified, called the internet.
-The telephone is in every American household that has electricity
-The movie "Titanic", has now become one of the most famous movies
-WWI, WWII, Korean War, Vietnam War, Gulf War, Gulf War II happened since then.
-Nearly every American owns an automobile
-Global warming has become a threat to the climate system, due to all the CO2 emitted since 1906 and before
-There is a vaccination for polio and the flu
.... was there a point to this, satan?
I don't remember. I think I'm going cenile.
no matter, we all are. interesting comparison though
I think I was gonna follow up with somethin like how much things have changed in the past 100 years but I was tired..................................
Both capitalism and communism have their flaws. That's why I choose to not have a political stance. While communism works to demonstrate equality, the economy usually suffers. It doesn't make much sence either, now does it? How is it fair that while a janiter who has no education and didn't even try hard in 'school' gets the same pay as a doctor who recieved a good education and worked his ass off to get it? It doesn't. However, on the hand, it doesn't make much sence that a person who was born on the street and never had a chance to receieve an education or a job, would stay homeless while a rich kid who was born with wealthy parents decided he would go to his prepaid university. Both ways has flaws. I support keeping small businesses though, instead of huge corperations taking jobs from hard-working people. Obviously both sides are corupted. I consider myself more liberal (or democratic as you Americans call it), than conservative (republican).
Nice essay hon A+
to say the least, a very thought provoking discussion.

i feel very young.
Nothing personal, but no one would create and share technology that would save to many people or bring people back from the dead. The world is already nearing the point of overpopulation. And because we cannot travel at or greater than the speed of light, it would be to expensive and to long of a wait to transfer people to different planets. (note: if you disagree wiht the cant travel at or faster than the speed of light, look at the theory of relativity, ALL of quantum physics have been derived FROM that, if theory of relativity isnt true, than nothing about quantum physics is true. Meaning a black hole cant exist, meaning positrons (antimatter version of nuetron) cant exist, although scientists have already recorded positrons being created from nuclear fission and fusion. meaning:

unless a disease kills alot of people so as there is more space per person, dont expect to be coming back from the dead any time soon.

Though your point of view is intresting, it is as real as magic and pixy dust.
well to be honest people who live that long tend to do nothing other than breathe eat and sleep that to medoes not count as a life and for dragoon118 you wouldn't have to travel interstellar distances to another planet

1: use Mars
Mars is situated between the asteroid belt and that wretched rock earth orbiting the star Sol mars has no magnetosphere to repel the solar wind and the planet is too small to keep an atmosphere if asteroids were hurled containing certain levels of radioactive substances deep enough into mars the planet would almost melt and the mass of the asteroid(s) would be added to mars this would have to continue until the core was sufficiently melted and the planet big nough gravity 0.8 of earth this would repel the solar wind allowing atmosphere to form creating higher global temperature allowing liquid water to be present and then once some plankton and soil has been introduced the atmosphere would be similar to earths' (with more CO2)meaning Bill Gates will buy it and set up a microsoft plant and McDonalds which causes riots on earth over who gets land which then causes everyone to kill each other
over population is not a good thing.

now.. dis is wot im saiin... WOTS WID ALL THE RIIN PEOPLE?! FRIKKEN ELL JUS SAY IT SHORT AND SIMPLE! =P
you sound like a simpleton
lets see i am also in to these things and i will satrt of with the longevity well you see we age by the pull of gravity
if you wanted to live longer go live on a planet with less gravity unless we some how make our planets gravty less then longevity will be impossible becauase there are just limits to our body and as we grow as a race we do not decide war is stupid and eventualy the human race will destroy our selfs why becuase its in our nature even if you don't like to admit it and if war stoped america would no longer be the most powerful country in the world since the only reason is that it is a superpower is becuase of war and anybody who denys this is plain stupid.the only thing that will make the world peacful is if 1 race rules the world becuase its either christian or muslims fighting blacks vs white white vs hispanic or they fight over points of view stupid people who protest for peace end up using force agisnt the police that try to uphold the law is that not hypocritical?
