I personally think jesus was a real person because there is historical evidence of this. I don't htink he was the son of god. I think the bible was written by people.
Part of the reason i think this is that if it had been written by or on the advice of an all knowing god he could done a much better job. For example, putting in some references to issues that would make sense once science had improved, eg. the status of a fetus and making his views on subjects like homosexuality.
I also think people who believe thay are in contact with god should be treated for schitzophrenia.

God did not write the Bible . . .

Actually there isn't any historical evidence for the existence of Jesus. He isn't mentioned in any ancient texts outside of the gospels or the other ancient writings which were also claimed to be by the apostles but did not get voted into the Bible with the rest of them.
There is a video now available about the evidence for Jesus having never existed. It is called, "The God Who Wasn't There"

As for your criticism of the quality and clarity of the Bible, I am in complete agreement. It is impossible for a perfect being to write or "inspire" such a flawed book. And the evidence that many of the books that were voted into the Bible were not written by the people they say they are was already acessible to Thomas Paine back at the founding of the United States. His book, "The Age of Reason," about the dubious authority of the Bible is available today from Project Gutenberg.
As for the schitzophernia question, I don't think that all people who make mistakes about evidence or hallucinate necessarily have mental problems. The thought process, when you pay attention to it seems to many people like voices inside the head. Senses and self-awareness can be confusing sometimes, particularly when it is a phenomena that you never hear anyone else talk about.
First of all,the bible was not flawed. If it was,I'm sure people would of caught on by now, considering that it is the best seller of all time.Yes,the bible was written by men. However,it was supernaturally written inspired by God.There is historical evidence that Jesus existed. And you can't believe he existed but wasn't the son of God.He performed miracles and spreaded the word and news of God.He taught people that he was the son of God.You say that people who believe they are in contact with god should be treated for schitzophrenia?Oh really. Then I guess 90% of the world should be treated for schizophrenia, considering that 90% believe in some kind of higher power.Sorry, but the bible is God's word.It may have some minor imperfections because of the translations, but it is still as valuable. In my opinion, you should take the bible more seriously.Especially Jesus Christ's death
Anonymous said true things/opinions. John Doe, like so many others, put words together and didn't give any damn reasons why.

Your statements are weak since abortion and homosexuality are bluntly addressed in the bible. It doesn't seem like you have a very broad perspective on faith and religion. You spell good too. Very normal.
This is perfectly normal. I don't believe in Jesus, Moses, Muhammad, or whoever else they're going to come up with next - It's all a deep psychological need to have an all-seeing father figure, someone to look up to when things aren't going well.
i have lost my faith in th christian religion this year, after rereading the bible in a different light, and thinking about it. the people that think that they are in contact woth god are not necessairaly 'schitzophrenic' as you so nicely put it, they are just acting on a human instinct. its all in the mind, really. humans need to believe in something like a higher power, its a human need. throughought history, and in other religions such as the greek myths (once was a religion) and the finnish book of kabalah (sp) it states that a higher power created man, and thee earth. these religions are now regarded upon as propoganda, that they could never be real, but they bear a striking ressemblance to our christian religion, such as the story of noah's ark is identical to the myth of the great flood, and the story of jesus' expeditions is much like that of the main character in the religion of kalelavah that the finns used to practice.
i also lost my faith in christianity this year
i also lost my faith in christianity this year
listen... I go to a catholic school and it really sucks! They force Christian existance and morality down my throat everyday and I argue with the fathers till they want to throw me out of class. But Religion is so important to society because it keeps people in check. If there was no religion everyone would be partying and having as much sex as possible just like me and the world would go to shit. I mean I also believe in good moral standing but hey I somones gotta hold this place down while I fuck it up right!?

I think the bible is flawed, just becasue a lot of people have believed it doesn't mean its true. The da vinci code is a bestseller that doesn't mean its true. And besides if you think the bible is true because lots of people have believed it then what about the Koran, or any other religuous book.

And people have twigged on many times, even though they often risked their lives or reputation for it. And surely with the gospel of judas floating around now you must have realised the foolishness of believing anything you read in an old book?

The thing about science is that when theres a better theory you move on and use that, because it works, a heliocentric circular model may work but ellipses work better, and a theory of gravity works better than that, and general relativity works better than that.

You can easily believe god existed and was not the son of god, in the same way you can think that any of the 'false messiahs' existed but weren't the son of god, and it doesn't mean that people then might have thought so. I mean come on read some of the b******s on the internet that people believe now, are you telling me that in 2000 years time those webpages will suddenly become true?

I agree that if people are to be treated for schitzophrenia then people should be treated for religion, if they would listen then it would only take a little chat, but unfortunately i fear that at the heart of this affliction is suspension of disbelief and denial, and debate generally relies on having a rational entity on the other side. What I'm saying here is that the treatment should just be discussion, and after all we should as moral people be treating schitzophrenics properly anyway.

And I think the opinion that religion is needed to keep people morally in order is laughable, niave and immature. Why should morals be anything to do with believing in a higher sentient being?

I don't go around f***ing my mum and shooting people just because I don't believe in god. Infact I would trust much more somone who was able to make desicions and choices based on rational thinking and evidence rather than somone who didn't question their views. Its like the person who says 'is my country doing the right thing' rather than believing their nation is superior to all others.

And sorry but considering the existence of 'God' is not a logical extension of available evidence this would imply that the bible could not logically be the word of God, as it is not rational to think he exists.

In my opinion, you should take the bible less seriously and try thinking, if you really want to find some answers go become an astrophysicist and find them, but you'll find its actually very hard, slow and often years of work take you the minutest part to a closer understanding of what happens. Sorry but that's reality.

YES ITS FRICKIN NORMAL TO NOT BE CHRISTIAN. THERES MILLIONS OF PEOPLE LIKE YOU. YOURE NOT SPECIAL.
He was a real person and it’s a damn shame. The historical records do exist and are quite easily verifiable.

By the bible I will assume you are referring to just what is called the 'old' testament, the five books of Moses, or the Torah. Since the 'new' testament was compiled during the council of nicaea (also historically verifiable). The 'old' testament however has no identifiable roots and the only historical record of any kind referring to its inception, is the one it contains.

So the problem is one of introduction. How and when was it introduced? Why was it believed and accepted? And where is the historical data regarding it?
i have decided not to believe. i dont care how we came to be, about all the little mysteries of the world. i just care about the now. casue thats all religion is. a theory.its not better that the science shit thats being pushed into the minds of the children of today. evolution, that little bit in the bible about adam, eve, and god breathing life into them. they are one and the same; a theory on how we got onto this earth. just with christianity, you are shouting your 'praises' to a god that very well might not be there, giving your life, and heart to something that very well might be a story conjured up in someone's head.
i dont need a theory. i dont care. we are here now, and we will be gone in 0.1-99.9 years, or so. why does it matter. i propose that we should live our lives in the present and not worry about how we got here, and why things are how they are and what will happen after death. i propose spontanianity. am i alone here, or does anyone agree with me?
Amen, sister.
.xox.mle I agree. I've been brought up to believe that we came from God and the whole Adam and Eve story, but I've always wondered what if all that was just made up by some fool many years ago? I think the reason I believe in him still is because I'm extremely afraid to die, and I'm hoping that there's more after death, and I'm hoping there's a Heaven.
yeah. that makes sense. eveyone who believes in god only believes in him because they are afraid of dying. they dont want to believe that after we have done our part on earth, we will die and rot in the earth. shame, because that's what happens, no matter where the soul (if there's really a soul) goes.
In september 6BC a man named Jushuah was born in Bethlahem. His mother's husband was the descendant of the kings of Israel. Joshuah started a cult with 12 men and a woman. Many stories about him were inacurately written 400 years after the fact and then edited, misstranslated several times, and here we are.

Similarly, there was one a bishop in Turnkey named Nickolas. He often wore a red Bishop's robe with white trim. The Spanish word for Nicolas is Clause, and the spanish word for Saint is Santa.
