The Sound of Chewing!!!!

I hate the sound of people chewing! It really annoys me and I'm not talking about the sound of Pop Corn in the theater. But, even when someone is eating like a carrot or even rice.. I can hear their sound eating. I get so agitated that I don't get to finish my breakfast. Even more, I dislike sitting on the same table during breakfast/lunch/diner cause I can't stand it and it causes family troubles because they never believed me. They always think that I'm making this up! Is anyone else bothered by this? or Am I too sensitive about it?

I hate it when people 1) chew with their mouth open 2) chew really loudly 3) gulp (like a really BIG gulp) when they drink something and 4) when they breathe REALLY loudly when they chew.

i am greatly bothered by it too! i always figured it was just because the way i grew up. My dad would get really pissed off if anyone chewed with their mouth open because of the sound and just the manners. My friends chew very loudly and they know it irritates me but they find it humorous, go figure! i start fidgeting and want to harm people when i hear them chew.. its just disgusting!

yeh this is how i feel :s . The thing is I was raised to chew with my mouth closed and now my father chews with his mouth open and I just can't help it.. I think cause he got older and his teeth are not functioning the same.. I feel that I'm mean. But, it really gets on my nerves :(

Oh yes - me too - definitely!!!

When it is just normal (well mannered) noise try to relax - you make the same noise - anyone does. Try to consciously tune it out & tell yourself to just relax. Thats more of a challenge with noisy foods ... but, just really try. They are not trying to offend you.

Bad manners/noisy eaters are tougher. I remember a whole family at a restaurant who ate with their mouths wide open - unbelievable. I left.

Or people at business meetings who decide to whip out a bag of carrots and crunch away! Wow. What do you do for an encore? I ask politely that they eat them later. They look absolutely shocked that their crunching at twice the volume of anyone speaking could be inappropriate!

Anyway - its often you who has the problem - so relax - get your family to realize its your problem and to help - try to enjoy meals with interesting & lively conversation, dinner music, or what have you.

But this is not always about those who are sensitive to eating noise. You have to deal those with repulsive or inappropriate eating habits more directly.

I agree with you on disliking hearing people chew and slurp. Poor manners. Have you ever experienced listening to an idiot scrape their tupperware bowl to get every atom of food out of it, then audibly suck its spoon and fingers?
I have. 2-3 times a day. I loathe this beast.

Yeah I don't like the sound of people swallowing water or soda quickly...that gulping noise is annoying. I see where you could be bothered by chewing

Me too!! I'm the exact same way. My dad chews very loudly so I always leave the room if he's eating.

It seems to bother me with only certain people. Its so gross and annoying.

grandmother- Chews long and fuckin SLOW... God forbid its chicken cause then i gotta hear the crunch of the damn chicken skin (always fried) and the damn grissle grinding as well. Horrid...

Mom- The most polite and well mannered woman until its carniage time. OMG... Her jaws come unhinged, whatever food is going in has no chance of touching anything but her tongue and the chompers to to work! Then on every 5th chew there is a fuckin smack or even two sometimes. It really bothers me cause she is always on a diet let her tell it but all she does is eats. She spends her waking hours trying to modify her usual fat foods to somehow make them diet and she eats forever. Then there is the drinking. I cannot even be on the same continent as her when there is coffee involved. WHY THE DAMN SLURP?

Coworker (female)- She used to think that her smaking bothering me was funny until i farted at every lunch... yeah...go head...call that shit into HR...

Dad- If you can ever get past his paul Bunion approach to cutting meat, you're in for a real treat when it reaches his mouth. There, you are sure to witness how a helping made for 3 people will get devoured by 1 mouth at 1 time. It's like watching a great white eat food. I mean, my dog makes nouise when he eats but he's a K9... no manners there. My dad.... WILD BOAR!!!

eEx girlfriend- Do you know she actually cited thin jaws as being the cause of me hearing her chew? It was terrible. Anything at all sounded like a muffled ocean. The spit and not to mention the sound of the air pockets theing compressed in the roof of her mouth i guess was gross. She thought the torture was hillarious as well until i would do things totally ruin the mood like open the car windows when it was storming or some other petty thing. And lets not talk about the tounge roll thing on the last few bites to make sure that every FUCKIN morsel went down her throat.

You see, i dont always notice it so its no big deal but once i do, its like i will go through whatever discomfort to not have to hear that shit cause if really fucks with me!!!! Its like when i see them and they speak all i see is me choking the shit out of em at a table. Dont know if its normal but i know its not normal the things I want to do to them when i get annoyed.

this is totally normal...for me anyway! i especially hate it when people eat with their mouth open but even when people eat with their mouth shut i can hear the chewing and then imagine the food churning around in their mouth and i find it really disgusting. also it irritate me more if im tired or hungover or in a bad mood coz i find it harder to ignore! so dont worry, you are not alone!

My husband and I have been fighting over this.. he is sooooo loud. He trys too keep his mouth shut but he chews loud even with his mouth open. He breaths heavy and fast, like he is starving or something. Or he clinks his spoon against the bowl until every last bit is gone. ughghg. I need some sort of coping mechanism.

My irritation with chewing isn't a result of bad manners--it's directly related to the sound of food being crunched. I can hear it now as my boss two office spaces away munches away on snacks--mouth closed, manners intact. My skin crawls every time I hear anyone around me chew, I have asked family to sit away from me or have gone into another room as family/friends eat away. When it rains, the light drip noises falling next to my window can keep me up all night. The Today Show did a report on this--it's more than just standing close to somebody with bad manners.

You better believe it's normal to be annoyed by people who can't exercise proper eating etiquette. People that crunch crispy foods so loudly that you can hear in another room is grounds for insanity for well mannered folks. Last year I attended a California history lecture and there was this skinny guy sitting in the back eating peanuts. Dear or dear that constant crunching and munching was making my adrenaline rise. I glared at him a few times, but he seemed totally oblivious to his crunch-a-bunch attack. I think somebody finally said something because he left long before the lecture ended. Some people may be totally unaware that they make the most egregious sounds when they're eating. Another major irk are the people who are constant throat clearers! UGGGGGGH! Do I hate that too! It seems to be more common with older men that make the most disgusting noises with their throats! Then there are younger "dudes" who think that it's "manly" to spit! Slobs! I could go on and on... There will always be ill mannered buffoons out there, and there will be always be us members of society who've been raised with good sense and manners.
