I wouldn't do it in front of your girlfriend but it's ok for comfort sometimes.

That's better than a guy I worked with who would put MY pen in his mouth.

Caught him putting a plastic fork handle in his mouth in the workroom kitchen when talking, then he PUT IT BACK in the bin!

I haven't sucked my thumb since I was maybe 9 years old. it was a really bad habit & I had to make myself stop......chew gum or smoke or something....keep something in your mouth constantly to keep you busy.

It could be a comfort thing, or it could be what is commonly referred to as an oral fixation. In order to keep this at bay, you should find something to keep your mouth occupied such as chewing gum, eating light and healthy snacks such as celery which cause you to chew a lot, or chewing tobacco if you already smoke (not recommended if you don't smoke considering it greatly shortens your lifespan in the long run). It's probably not advised to sharing this with people such as your girlfriend as it could lead to a misinterpretation.

i sucked my thumb till i was 9 (then picked it up again till about 12 when i stopped again)
it was always just a sub concious thing but i decided to stop when i accidentally did it in school and the teacher POINTED IT OUT and the other kids laughed XD

but i still CONSTANTLY chew on things (like just now im chewing on a pen, before that i was chewing on a piece of plastic for a few hours, before that a straw, plastic army man, gum, etc etc)

i don't do it mysef, but if anyone i knew did it, i wouldn't really care

I can't believe only 18% of people find this normal. It's actually very common. I'm a 21-year-old female and I love sucking my thumb. Embrace it.

I am a 22 yr. od woman and i always suck my thumb when i watch tv on the couch or when i need to sleep. It's not a habit that i'm proud of but hey, i don't drink or smoke so i gotta do something right? My boyfriend thinks its kinda cute. ;-)

Thanks for the encouragement. I don't plan on stopping. Not when I'm on my own anyhow. One day I might feel comfy enough with someone to share it.

That's messed up. I couldn't understand kids doing it never mind 30 yr olds. Sort it out!
