LOL. I think in Mexico if you flush toilet paper it probably clogs up their toilet, or messes up their crappy septic tanks. Hell I don't even know if they even have septic tanks. So they probably just don't understand its okay to flush toilet paper in America.

O OK! i didn't understand. I can tell you why, I'm mexican, raised in mexico city. In mexico the toilets get clogged up really easy because the water rush is very slow... give us a break our technology sucks... so we always throw paper in the trash can. Even here i still have a habit of throwing paper in the toilet ... but yes it is normal in mexico.

Yeah. The sewer system in Mexico is unable to handle toilet paper in many places.
Just imagine what they think of us for not even having enough sense to put a wastebasket next to every toilet.
The part that I don't understand is why their fellow countrymen who have been here long enough to learn better don't just tell them to stop doing that!

I'll let you in on a secret: flushing the toilet is a better way to get sick than putting tp in the waste basket. Flushing is one of the best ways to aerosolize germs, so the bacteria you put into the toilet, like E. coli, get sent up into the air every time you flush. Kinda starts to make you paranoid, doesn't it?

Go visit a friend who lives in the country, they most likely with have a septic tank and many of those people don't flush the paper because it will stop up the toilet.

We need to approach this issue from a MUCH different angle. Now in Meico, folks are generally poor. They dont have the same resources we have here. Anything that gets flushed is considered WASTE. NO ONE EVER RECYCLED ANYTHING AT THE SEWAGE TREATMENT PLANT. So, as odd as it may seem, they toss the paper in the basket because they know it will eventually get recycled, not burnt to shitty ash. So do mexicans need to be toilet trained like americans, thats a matter of opinion. Do americans need to be environmentally trained like the mexicans, ABSOLUTELY.

JeJe, I really laughed my lungs ouy of this story. I live in Chile (yes, the longest southern country in South America that's named after a condiment). Chile is considered as an uprising economy, and is steping fast on becoming a developed country, so, in case you're wondering: we do wear shoes, live in houses, have cars, internet, Coke, fine universities, bluetooth, iphones, etc. :o)

Nontheless: is very common in public places to find signs warning NOT to throw paper into the sink. As nancygonzalez stated before if you flush paper it all gets stucked. That is because the tank and toilet are smaller than the ones you use (I don't have the slightest idea of why). The toilets in old houses (say 30 years old or so) are bigger, but the modern ones and the ones that are on sale now are just tiny, you wont find larger sizes :o)

I believe the 'mexicans' you are referring to are not the only ones to have the habit of throwing toilet paper in the trashcan. If its a really strong odor/colorful piece, that is not the most polite thing to do. there could be alot of reasons, customs (like some europeans have), dont want to clog the toilet, and forgetfullness? or maybe its to confuse people like you, now that would be an interesting case indeed!

I've seen this in a lot of predominantly Hispanic parts of the U.S. I don't understand it, since toilet paper does NOT clog the toilet (unless you use way too much or your pipes are about 150 years old).

I'm also a white American who throws tp in the waste basket. My home's toilet and plumbing are less than perfectly reliable and I truly fear the thought of my toilet overflowing.

That is absolutely disgusting. How often do you empty the basket? Because the smell doesn't go away with time!

The reason they do this is it makes it available for easy reuse should the need arise. You can't do that if you flush it. But seriously, it seems to be a cultural thing and it completely disgusts me! I live where there are a lot of Mexicans and this practice is in play in every public restroom. Walmart, McDonald's, you see it everywhere! If the trashcan is full they just throw it on the floor. This is and their insistence on speaking spanish are the sole issues I have with illegal immigrants. Otherwise they could all stay for all I care.

..But yeah there definately shouldn't be used toilet paper in there, I have a mexican room mate and though we have alot of cultural differences, he's never once done this. So probably the people you're around just haven't gotten used to the change yet. Don't be so fucking judgemental, yeah it's gross but it's also fucking nasty when people pick up their dogs shit off the ground..

is that fact? i really doubt they do it for enviromental reasons. The not clogging the toilet theory is more accurate, from what i've heard/read. Besides I don't want to use recycled paper that some mexican used to wipe his butt. I don't care how its treated before repackaging!!

ok, i grew up in texas doing that cause everyone i knew did it. when i finally moved on my own i forgot to buy a waste basket so i started flushing the tp. years later a friend asked me if all mexicans did that, and i had never thought about that. so i noticed one of my friends did it, i asked her and she was embarrased and quit doing it. now im trying to get my family to quit doing it, unsuccesfull.when i go to mexico they all do it and ask them why, and they dont know either. just the way we are taught, ive never clogged a toilet in mexico. lol. just habit to them

jus by the by, mexico isn't the only place in the world where the pipelines are too small for the tp to get thru - quite a few cities in europe are like this (generally the poorer ones with older sewage systems). if any of u ever go on a yacht this is prob wat u'll need to do...
