It is just as important to "manage up" as well as down (and sideways). You may be sitting on a golden opportunity without knowing it. If you are right about your boss's insecurity and your ability, you should be able to find a way to succeed by helping him to succeed -- get him promoted to a position where he will need you even more!
Your enlightened self-interest is to make the company successful regardless of individual credit. Don't be afraid take the blame for everything that you can (only people who actually DO things can make consequential mistakes!). Eventually, your individual professionalism should be recognized.
Of course, it may be hopeless. Only you can be the judge of that. You might be better off changing jobs because it is so risky to stagnate in a job too long if you really don't have the chance to perform to full potential. You're not getting any younger, and your potential only has so much shelf life.
Unfortunately, and you may have an insecure boss at your new job as well!
Those are the downside values of corporate culture: ruthless competitiveness, waste, plagiarizing, subordination... Is that where you want to be?
Sometimes the only way to go up the job ladder is by applying for a position at a different employer one position higher than you previous were and do that throughout your career (very much depends what industry you work in), but at a different company every time, good for experience too.
if hes really terrible, give yourself the respect you deserve and quit. no one deserves to be treated like that.
Well it is normal but you need some fucking tolerance.
