the english language is whatever people speak, in different regions of america people speak slight variations of english
the kind of english that you learn in school is so that you can communicate with people who can only understand english if it's in the universally known form with no slang
so if you get angry because you have difficulty understanding any english outside of a textbook then you should get out and start talking to people to improve your comprehension skills
I think you're a little confused, flikr. Butchering the English language, I would think, is used in reference to the lack of respect for syntactical and grammatical rules upon which the language itself is based.
The use of slang is understandable and yes, an unavoidable result of the culture using a language. I don't think anyone is denying that. I also don't think using simplistic or heavily slang-based language is a good method to gain the respect of others.
Barring mistakes(which are normal) I don't consider the following to be "slang": the omission of entire words, a lack of punctuation, the misuse of contractions and the replacement of letters by numbers or other letters which are nonsensical in their context.
A person making a comment based on personal opinion, being already shaky grounds for an argument, it would be advantageous for he/she to understand the efficacy of correct, eloquently phrased statements.
ayezzz, ii h8 it when ppl typ lyk dat... XD I kid... I think as long as a post's comprehensible, in some way coherent and has a valid point it doesn't reflect badly on the poster. I, for one, don't really worry about how I'll be judged if I type in a certain manner when I'm on a forum where nobody knows me irl, so don't bother that much with the technical accuracies of what I'm typin, and I'm sure other people feel the same : ) but if you want to speak properly, more power to ya.
your confused you dont know how to speak good english but you think you do just because you try to make your comments look like a essay paper your trying to get a A on
this is the internet not an english class, grow up
Well when someone is writing in a post and you don't know them, the way they write is the only way that you can see the old saying happening but in print "First Impressions are lasting ones!" I don't mean to be a prick but when posts are almost unreadable you do seem to formulate a mental picture of them, it is human after all.
I dunno...I can see why u'd be annoyed by all these people going 'OMFG, LOL,' etc, but I don't think the issue is simply whether people butcher the English language or not...it's whether they ever completely understood the grammatical structure of the English language in the first place. If you read thousands and thousands of pages of classic and modern literature, chances are you have a pretty solid sense of how to write effectively and flawlessly. If you've never bothered to read more than a few trifles here and there, then you will NOT be able to do this. Such people as this are the really annoying ones...these people could never write correctly in the first place, and now they are simply speaking in phonetics without proper sentence structure to boot...f**k these morons. I have a little more respect for those who are obviously writing English as a second language; these people don't make me quite as sick as the uneducated blockheads out there. If someone has read and written countless pages of text and learned all the rules, etc., I see no reason why they can't have a little fun n break the rules a bit...lol
why is it such a big deal? if you judge a person by their grammatical mistakes, there is a good chance you may miss out on a decent point of view. I personally cannot remember a time when i could not understand the gist of what someone was trying to say because of grammatical errors. Being English i cannot stand it when fellow Brits complain about "Americans ruining our language". Just get over it, Language evolves, and language can only evolve through error.
Im pretty tolerant towards typing like "wateva, wen and m8" but when people use exactly the same amount of letters as the correct spelling, like bruvver or tastee is pisses me off.
Right, and as you type this, you're making sure you absolutely will not add a period on to your sentence or capitalize the first letter of your first sentence, because you're trying to prove how NOT of an english essay paper person you are like the dude who you're accusing. Kudos, keep up the good work.
No I dont because 'broken down' versions of english can identify someone, it will be boring if everyone talked the queens english, and that's proper english with the Ts and Qs being all pronounced
Plus slang is the modern way to communicate to people similar to you
Yes, languages evolve. Get used to it. The internet is a dramatically different medium for communication so you're going to see a lot of changes to the language.
Habitually judging people is only going to limit the number of people you can potentially connect with, but it's the internet so who gives a shit right? :)
yu got no idea wat yu talkinn about lol sorry but yall are beinn dumb... english is just a bunch of made up words i can create my own language and brainwash people into learnin it and call it english ........ [=
I agree 100%% on this one. It really annoys me when people rit lik dis oll da tim. What the fuck is that? Grow up. I'd rather take the extra time to write shit out than look like a moron.
i agree with you to an extent i dont like when peope use abreviated words but at the same time im dislexic so im not very good with spelling and my grammar is nearly non existent and i suffered through all my school years from bullying mostly from the teachers who talked about me to my face and said i was stupid and wouldnt amount to anything so at the same time i think you cant be to judge mental on people if its a misspelt word it isnt that bad but when its abreviation i completely agree with you ( kind of worried that i spelt somethings wrong now lol )
@ToxicPink4312 " I also dislike it when people try to insult me, but it turns out like this : "ur reeatard stfu gtfo bicth" "
Haha... I totally know how that feels! Though I can do a bit of the 'lol, omg' sometimes, the other type irritates me. The rude illiterate ones. Something like 'ur not evan no how to spel biotch! wtf don act lik ura dmart arse'. It really makes me feel sad for them. It annoys me more when they not only don't know how to spell, but they have a major attitude problems.
What really trips me out are the people that will criticize someone else's spelling or grammar, only to finish their own complaint with something like "OMG ur dumb! LOL!".
I'd like to think that people have some sort of self-consistency with things like that. I guess not though.
Languages evolve, yes. That is natural. The only way languages stop evolving is by becoming extinct. But intentionally using mistakes or not caring enough to use correct grammar when it would be appropriate--that's just ignorance.
However, there ARE times when it's acceptable. For example, when kids are texting each other or in a quick e-mail. But when you're talking to strangers, it's better to get it right. After all, you wouldn't start spouting off slang and jargon to a stranger!
English is part of our collective history. We should take the time to treat it with respect.
Also, I disagree with the idea that Internet English or text talk is going to affect standard English. Why would roflmao, omg, or ur become standard?
An observation: a few of the people defending poor English don't seem to understand how language works in the first place.
The people you speak of are mentally weak and need to wise up before they get left behind with the other weak people.
Grammar on the internet is important because it's an extension of who you are in real life. Therefore, when you are lazy, ignorant, and illiterate on the internet, it leads others to believe you're that same person in real life.
I hate it when people talk like that on the internet. It's just lazy! It annoys me like hell but you just have to learn to deal with it and ignore them. Also annoys me when all these chavs are like 'IlOvEyOuBaBe<33' ;/
AGREED! It's unfortunate. Even on this site, many times I have closed out a topic with an interesting title simply because the author typed what seemed like an alien language to me. Punctuation makes a big difference. Many young people are frightened of commas, I think.
It's starting to become a bit irritating to me to see complaints about the "idiotic butchery of the English language prevelant everywhere - especially on the internet >:-(" where the author of such a complaint butchers grammar and/or spelling themself.
I know that I'm no saint in that department myself, but I'm not the one complaining. I'm complaining about the complaints! Grr.
It's not even funny anymore. The irony of it used to be funny as hell, sure, but NOT ANYMORE. The fact that the absent comma is a flaw in a complaint about bad English just makes it niggle in my mind. It sticks out like a sore, ripe pimple!
Hahahaha I'm just having fun because I'm really bored. I'm sorry, I'm just like that. It wasn't really serious :P Well, sometimes I do feel like that, but not with you dear OP.
Anyway, "txtspk" does make the people who use it unnecessarily sound a bit silly, I agree. Not only can it be hard to read for others - I find that when I read things, I read things as they sound. For example, if something is written "I no abt tht! Yh n den all dem ppl went out l8r" (ugh, really bad example, I know), I'll hear it in my head like...that! It sounds silly, right?! However, I don't hold it against anyone if I know what they're on about. Usually, I can work it out. If it's too encoded, then I probably won't read it anyway.
The only time it really bothers me during light subjects. Shit, I'm not going to be one of those dickheads that complains about grammar when a persons talking about being molested or something like that. I've seen that. That's just messed up.

so if you get angry because you have difficulty understanding any english outside of a textbook then you should get out and start talking to people to improve your comprehension skills
people made up "slang" words and then when other people adopted that word it became part of the language
fuck you
The use of slang is understandable and yes, an unavoidable result of the culture using a language.

It's kind of sad that you can't remember that you are results the contraction you're, not your (which is posessive).
Grow up and learn not to shit all over the English language.
n u dun no how tu speek gud english
Yeah i digg , what your saying ..
I hate " Typing Noobs " with pation.. :D
Awell , even i some time's turn into one..
then i disown myself and tell myself i should commit suicide :)
ok that was a lie , but you probably had fun reading it :)
I don't mean to be a prick but when posts are almost unreadable you do seem to formulate a mental picture of them, it is human after all.
Take Care all,
and Merry Christmas
"you to u"
in order not to take so long typing its not just because they dont know how to spell
P.S. Not really, and I know that rule is archaic and based in nothing more than the pursuit of pseudo-latin rules for English.
Being English i cannot stand it when fellow Brits complain about "Americans ruining our language". Just get over it, Language evolves, and language can only evolve through error.
Have a nice day.
Plus slang is the modern way to communicate to people similar to you
The worst part is that my English is becoming worse from talking to other people with bad English every day.
Habitually judging people is only going to limit the number of people you can potentially connect with, but it's the internet so who gives a shit right? :)
anyway yeah i can get annoyed when people spell like 'tards but if i know they're speaking in text language i don't care

Ignorance is a bad habit for many people.
