  • To make things clearer, I am currently in the U.S. but my family is Jamaican. My dad immigrated here when he was younger. Dreads are common where they're from, but not really here. I suppose that's what makes me apprehensive.

Well, yeah, then it isn't really according to your culture, unless you're trying to recreate the culture of Jamaica here in the U.S, in which case please stop.

      • When you grow up in a household where people speak a certain language, cook certain food, and celebrate the holidays of another culture - that becomes part of your culture. The United States is not a homogenous nation. That's like saying that a mexican-american household that speaks spanish, eats traditional meals, and celebrates cinco de mayo cannot claim mexico as part of their culture.

I don't mean to be rude, but you should honestly spend a bit of time researching Sociology or Cultural Anthropology. It talks about these things in depth.

You don't seem rude at all, so no worries.

I guess what I'm saying is this: There's a growing current of thought here in the U.S. that we've been too generous in letting in immigrants, and that our generosity is being taken advantage of by foreigners who don't even respect us enough to conform to our cultural norms. (This is a big part of the reason for Donald Trump's getting elected.)

As someone whose family is foreign to the U.S, you have the ability to either confirm or disprove this thinking. I'm not saying your hair-do is some grave matter with vast socio-political implications. But I do think going around with the attitude that "the United States is not a homogeneous nation" and therefore you shouldn't feel any pressure to conform is a bit reckless.
