In reality, 'duh' probably started as an imitation of a mentally handicapped person's speech.
We do have our own British version, inspired by a poor disabled guy featured on Blue Peter in the 80s, called Joey Deacon :/ Do you know it? You go 'EEERRRRRRGHHH!!!' with your tongue pressed against the inside of your bottom lip and contort your face. Here's a clip about it:

Haha! Fancy that! I actually had seen someone do that before, but never knew that it was actually inspired by one person in particular. I suppose you really do learn something every day. You have to do that thing with the bent wrist against the side of your head for the full effect though :-)
