Hahaha I love the theater!!! Last time I saw something really creepy was in Nice, France. It was so absolutely incompatible with the original play (which unfortunately i cannot recall) that I only stayed until the very end to see where it would go. And it went. This bald, fish-eyed, beer-belly, 50sh year-old man, naked on a table, center stage, covered in tinted water, saying heaven knows what, because my thoughts were much louder than his voice at that point. Yes, I love the theater! :D
Sadly, it's people like those that make so many dislike it. :/
I did that once at the opera. It was an 'Aussified' opera. The line that made me lose it was the very poetic "I'm not gonna bludge offa ya, you're me sheila".
Was the play you saw directed by Barrie Kosky, by any chance?
Is it normal matchmaking.

In our final year of highschool, we went to see King Lear. It had heavy BDSM themes.
'Twas quite an eye opener. I'd never seen St Andrews crosses and gimp masks before. Or whips used like that.
Though apparently, the staging of Macbeth that the other class saw was a lot more disturbing. Necrophiliac rapist midgets dressed as Christmas trees.
I wish I was joking :-S

At that point, I'd be on the floor laughing.

I laughed my ass off that day! I was glad I didn't leave before the end, which was my first thought during the first 15 minutes.
The director was a Niçois, not an Australian, and it was a very low budget production. :)
