How did you get those little symbols?

      • Google up "Unicode symbols". Cut and paste them.

    • Ha ha ha. Sorry folks, I just deleted an additional comment from a worthless unoriginal troll. As if he even thinks he knows who I am. Bwahahaha.

  • For the most part it is a waste of time. Recycling paper is completely unnecessary. Paper companies farm trees, which are a renewable resource. Deforestation is primarily the result of development. Paper is not going to cause the world to run out of trees. Also the chemical treatment used to recycle paper is toxic for the environment.

Plastic, as anyone who has ever seen the green plumes of smoke coming out of the treatment facilities in NJ knows, releases toxic chemicals into the air when melted, and the resulting usable plastic is minimal and not worth it. If you don't care about polluting the air and want to keep it out of landfills, you would be better letting it go to a trash to electric power plant and have it burned for enegry instead, at least it has more value that way, the same is true for paper. If you have such a power plant in your area all you have to do is just throw it in the garbage.

The only thing worth recycling is metal. Metal has value, can be melted and repurposed easily, and with less environmental impact than mining. Everything else is just to make people feel good about themselves and often does more harm than good.

I concur completely with this. Everything goes into my trash. I even throw drinks cans and food tins into the trash.

Possibly glass too, but yeah paper and plastic really don't seem to be worth it.

Yeah. We have a recycling collection programme that provides us recycling bins including a food waste bin. We get a free bag of compost from the city authority each month which is great!

Christ.... Anti, I was trying to delude myself from the truth.

Much like when I get a tax return and I try to delude myself from the fact it was my own damn money to start off with.

Yes. When I was younger I thought it was strange when a friend's family didn't have a recycle bin in the kitchen.

        • Yes, but Capt_Flat's comment was fair. It was unintelligent for flyingnostalgia to fail to establish the relationship between taxes and recycling.

True, true, I was a bit harsh. Sometimes being fair and harsh at the same time crosses lines.

We don't recycle the way you mean, but we re-purpose many of the things we use on the boat.
The islands do not have traditional recycling programs because it is way too costly to ship garbage overseas. It would be nice if there was a way though, because it's either a landfill or in the ocean, which isn't good for either.

It must be hard having to throw garbage into an imaginary sea, from your imaginary boat.

I usually just throw mine in someone else's backyard, because I have an IQ of 151 and study at an elite university and don't need to comply with the demands of others.

My 2 girlfriends are also 0 years my junior.

Why not grind up plastic and glass and mix it with asphalt to pave roads? This is an excellent way to get rid of the stuff without polluting.

I try to and I reuse whatever I can, like paper bags and certain plastic containers so I don't have to buy tupperware. I keep my glass jars and use them as drinking glasses or bric-a-brac holders . Stuff like that.

  • wigz

Whether you separate it or not doesn't really matter. Only the stuff that's worth money or is cost-effective to reuse will get recycled anyway and there's a fair possibility that your trash gets sifted through and sorted at a transfer station.

We can make some of it marginally cost effective by taxing land fill use at a low rate. check this -> http://www.scientificamerican.com/podcast/episode/is-recycling-worth-the-effort/
