i am a 45 year old male ... and bored out of my mind. I have been a stay home dad for the past 4 years dealing with two teenage kids. I have about a 4 hour block of time each day to use or waste .... i am looking for ideas on what to do. Please don't tell me that i need to take up reading or gardening (or start banging the neighborhood soccer mom .. even though that would be fun) as that is really boring and provides no stimulus at all. Are there other middle aged guys out here that have any great hobbies. Or are there any middle aged women that want to chat ..

    How about volunteering your time helping the less fortunate? Or an animal shelter.
    If there is a candidate in your area (local government level, to begin) you think might be a worthy investment for your time, they always need staffers.
    I think it would be fun to volunteer at a zoo or aquarium, if there was one nearby.

    thanks of the comments. i am not worried about it being to late to find something to do. i am a very energetic 45 yr old. i already completed my long hour work days and could afford the luxury to leave the rat race and be home ...

    maybe this is just a mid life crisis !!

    Are you good with your hands? Get some tools and a stack of wood and do some woodworking as a hobby? Making stuff makes you feel like reach small goals and accomplish things.

    It is normal enough but I have little sympathy. Anyway what's wrong with gardening? And if you read you may actually learn something and broaden your horizons or be entertained very well.
    It would help me to be more empathetic if you were more honest about your motives. I don't mean that I think you are a complete liar but you could do with thinking this through more carefully. If I analyse what you say correctly then you are heading for trouble. The way you don't talk about your wife and kids worries me a bit. I don't think I like you much, but I may just be tired and a bit sour. You could just be a nice guy with a limited imagination or perhaps you're bone idle? Oh, I don't know because I'm not perfect either. I'll go to bed and mull it over a bit. I hope you will sleep well when bedtime comes and wake up feeling better and with some new ideas. If you say a bit more about what you are like, people could think about it and may well help.

      i thank you for your comments but please re read what i wrote. i am looking for hobbies to fill 5 hours of my day. i am an active father .. coach .. tutor.. etc for my kids for the other 19 hours of the day (outside of sleeping). I placed this question not to be judged if you like me or not.

      We are all different .. i have no interest in gardening. I have a college degree and a professional designation and participate in many sports. but i am looking for more .. and gardening will make my list when i am 70. .. not at 45 and very active.

    I feel sorry for you if you really believe gardening and reading are boring: depends what you grow and what you read, surely?

    Your local library wd probably have info on local activities; try noticeboards and if nothing appeals put up your own notice; local newspaper' community college for craft or general interest courses or learn something online ....... the possibilities are endless. Don't waste your life being bored!

    This is a common problem for anyone (male or female) whose put most of their energy into making a living and not left any room for other interests, but it's not too late for you to find something interesting to do.
